I'm pretty cheap. I rarely buy XBLA games unless they're on sale. That's why I'm interested in seeing how cheaply I can complete Game Room, a game that basically gives out achievements for spending money. My goal is to get 1000 gamerscore in Game Room without spending more than 4000 msp ($50) on it.
Most people don't know this, but it's cheaper to earn medal points by buying single plays of each game once (if you earn at least one silver or two bronze medals) than by buying games and getting three gold medals in them. That's what I plan to do to get much of the 380 points required to reach level 20.
The hard part will be getting the time spender medals; not many games will let me spend half an hour or more in a single play. But it is possible to get time spender medals using single plays--that's how I got http://www.trueachievements.com/achievement.aspx?achievement...
I have no time frame for this, and it will take a very long time, but I plan on updating this thread whenever I make significant progress. Stay tuned!

| Screw this game. I only needed four achivements. I was at level 16 and had over 60 hours logged when one day i logged in and all of my stats were erased. Yeah, that's right, everything was re set to zero for me. So...,screw this piece of crap money sucking game. |

I don't have the game but I am intrigued.
What would be an average gamers medal points for this play? You have 9, is that normal? Are you experienced in the game? PLayed on another account?
Bear in mind I haven't even played the game... |

It's kind of an anomaly. In Super Breakout, you can let the game sit between balls and it counts towards time spent. I basically moved the thumbstick back and forth for an hour and got a gold survivalist medal. I wanted to be sure that you can actually earn time spender medals from single plays before I went ahead with this idea.
And no, I haven't played game room on another account, but I've been reading about it since it came out so I know quite a lot about it.
EDIT: Most of the games I'll get time spender medals in will be single-medal games like Adventure where you can stay alive indefinitely. For the rest of the points I hope to average 5-7 points per play. |

| This is a good idea, methinks. I've bought 3 games on Game Room (ones that I legitimately enjoy, so I don't regret that), but there's not much else I'd really want to own. I can definitely see dropping 50 cents on some stuff just to get a better feel for it and get some medals though, much more reasonable than 3 bucks. |

Easy Survivalist & Time Spenders: Activision Decathalon - Press A to view score. Night Stalker - Move up and down at start. Pitfall! - Go back and fourth on the rope and press A. Super Breakout - Before the ball starts, move left & right. Super Breakout [2600] - Same as above. Video Pinball - Use left right bumpers before shooting ball. Pinball [Intellivision] - Same as above. ^ These can be played 40msp for many hours except Pitfall which is timed. Practice these games in demo or token play to get the hang of them to get all gold medals.
Yars Revenge - Go left and right avoid missile as much as possible to drag out time.
Galactic Warriors - Go left and right, jump over shots and let timer run out, you will need to defeat opponents but its easy (atleast with poseidon fist move).
Crystal Castles - Avoid enemies in start and go opposite of wall to the beehive when it drops down. die, repeat - 2-3 minutes used. right before you get him on top of you again go secret portal (jump upper left corner). Do the same next level to drag time over 6 minutes.
Astrosmash: Shot the white capsules while also shooting asteroids. You should be able to get 15 min easily and possibly 3 medals in one 40msp play.
Space Hawk: Just fly around and shoot til you die by that time you should have plenty extra lifes.
Black Widow: Easy Point buster: choose intense (right stick down) and survive one round for 100k score. Survivalist: choose the first mode and take your time. First wave don't shoot stay behind colored lines and let the fly collect the other bugs. Next waves start shooting and at the end when its safe let the bug collect. keep shooting the red bugs to keep them at distance while you move away. |

You can go over 10 minutes just not on Adventure (and possibly all 1 medal games). Ive had several 40msp plays with 3 medals in the 10-15 point range. Latest being Galactic warriors 18min, and Decathalon 30min+. |

| If you have two hours of your life to burn, you can get all 3 gold medals on a single play of LASER BLAST. Once you get the pattern down from playing the demo, it's almost impossible to run out of lives since you get one every 1000 points. You need 120 minutes (2 HOURS) for Time Spender Gold, so keep track of the time you start and what time you need to play until, then play at least 10 minutes over that just to be safe. My score was 324,000 at the 2-hour mark if you want an idea of how far along you are. |

Apart from needlessly restricting the player on a paid play, I'll need to find more 3-medal games in which I can earn time spender medals on only a few plays.
I'll definitely try Laser Blast though. Thanks for the tip Gunstar419.
Incidentally, the reason I haven't updated this thread is because I haven't played again, because I'm broke. Check my blog for future updates. |

Well I spent my last 40 msp on a single play of Yar's Revenge. Didn't last the 25 minutes needed to earn a time spender medal so I'll buy at least one more play in it. Don't know when that will be, though. [frown]
Microsoft points spent: 80 (2 single plays)
Medal points: 14 (level 1) Point Breaker - 1 Survivalist - 2 Time Spender - 1

The real secret to getting 1000 gamerscore cheaply is to go halfsies with someone else!!!
Now if only I can get one of my roommates to buy a few games...
Of course, buying single plays goes directly against being able to share your games with friends.

I bought some microsoft points!!! So now I will be able to make more progress on this goal. After my last single play of Yar's Revenge left me 6 minutes shy of a time spender medal, I knew I had to play it again. I also managed the 50,000 points needed for a gold point buster medal. So now I have 12 points in Yar's Revenge. Remember, even though it took me 2 single plays to get the time spender medal on this one, it's still 160 points cheaper than buying it outright.
Microsoft points spent: 120 (3 single plays)
Medal points: 21 (level 1) Point Breaker - 2 Survivalist - 2 Time Spender - 2
Games played, excluding demos: Super Breakout (arcade) Yar's Revenge (2600) x2 |

I've played a little more, and discovered that time spent in the free demo DOES count towards the time spender medal! This makes it a little easier to get those pesky things. Single play - Laser Blast (2600) Gold point buster, gold survivalist, silver time spender Single play - Finalizer (arcade) Silver point buster, bronze survivalist, null Single play - Video Pinball (2600) null, gold survivalist, bronze time spender
Points/cost Microsoft points spent: 240 (6 single plays) Medal points: 46 (level 3) Total cost at this rate: 2520 msp ($33)
Medals Point Breaker - 4 Survivalist - 5 Time Spender - 4
Games Super Breakout (arcade) Yar's Revenge (2600) x2 Laser Blast (2600) Finalizer (arcade) Video Pinball (2600) |
