According to TA, this game filters into the Puzzle category, anyone else kinda confused with that?

    Figured racing or action.

Racing probably makes more sense, but even the official website makes reference it including "physics puzzles". Xbox.com says it's "Action & Adventure, Racing & Flying" though.

Just checked the genre suggestion thread and it looks like they're still tinkering with the genre system here, so it might change in the future. You might want to check this post for more info:

I can understand why it is puzzle. See it as a timed puzzle. If you do the extreme or hard tracks you often have to navigate each track part differently and work out what you need to do to beat the obstacle

I would say it is a 2D platformer.

This along with Crash Course should be Platformers. Just my two cents.

The most accurate genre would be "puzzle platformer," albeit it's an odd example of one. It's got the jumping and puzzles though.

The minigames are a better example of why this is a puzzle game, you have to work out a strategy or you'll be stuck on bronze/silver medal.

What do you mean 2D, it's obviously 3D.
Because in the inside the ball minigame you can see that it's a 3D game.

2D because of how we view the character, it's not the same as Mario 64 for example.

True, but isn't there still 3D objects in there, right?

Yes, but we're talking about the genre, not how the graphics are made.

2D platformers are called this way because you see the action from the side.
3D platformers are called this way because you move in a 3D environment.

In Trials you're always going from left to right, on a sole axis.

It's a bit like fighting games and 2D, 2,5D and 3D types, where SF is 2D, games with side steps are 2,5D, and Tenkaichi is 3D.
