Batman Arkham FrustrationPermalink
I got the game on release day and played it for a while. Like any good player, I wanted to do all of the side missions as they showed up. so I did the two that just required me going somewhere and doing some stuff. Then came the Riddler one. Apparently, he now hosts Batmobile races. I almost beat the first one, just a second or two slower than I needed to be. I hope there is a Batmobile upgrade for sticky wheels. So I gave up on that for the moment, to the Riddler's amusement, and went back to the story. I guess I should have figured, since one of the achievements is based on making the Batmobile jump, that there would be some jumping involved. I just gets a little frustrating to have to start the whole jumping sequence over again if you don't do it perfectly and land on the ground. I'm just glad that the Batmobile is invulnerable outside of battles and races. I'll get the hang of it eventually, but in the meantime I have other games to fall back on that I have yet to complete.

Dependent AchievementsPermalink
I hate when I can't get a certain achievement because I have not got another one first. For example, I am currently trying to finish the Lego Hobbit game. There are exactly enough bricks in the game to craft every item, and I still need the last two which are rewards for two very hard races. This means I cannot get two achievements based on crafting. Not getting that means I cannot complete all of the quests in the game for an achievement. Also, the last character is only available once everything is crafted, so there goes another achievement. Not being able to get those means I am stuck at 99.1% completion and even when I get those I still need to go buy another controller for the one achievement that requires a level played in co-op mode. I have no doubt that I will get the races done eventually, they just tax my patience something awful.

Non-Gamers Just Don't UnderstandPermalink
To paraphrase Will Smith from a long time ago, people who don't play games don't seem to understand those of us who do. My mother has long seen playing games as a waste of time. I had to laugh the other day when she found herself playing a game for two hours when she could have been "doing something useful like laundry." On a similar note, people who don't play will believe a lot of things that just are not true. Do you remember the whole Mass Effect thing from Fox News years ago where they called a little side boob graphic pornography? How about the perception that playing violent games makes people violent? I'm not saying that does not happen to anyone, but unless someone has a mental disorder they know what is real and not real.

Coming Along WellPermalink
I've spent a while working on flags and getting achievements and I'm almost done with Damascus now after completing Kingdom and Acre. I love the map site and I am being very careful to check that the number on my self-calculating spreadsheet matches the number that comes up when I get a flag. I found that there are certain times to get certain flag groups. Memory 4, as soon as you can go everywhere in Kingdom is great for collecting all of the flags and Templars there. Memory 5, as soon as you can explore all of Acre and Damascus is a great time to swoop in there (pre final assassination in the 3rd area) and 6 for Jerusalem. I'm only having a few Templar issues that are easily remedied by going back to the Animus and continuing the game again. I also recommend completing the fighting achievements prior to your 3rd target in Jerusalem. If you kill them, you are expected to go find another target right away without a Masyaf interlude. You can still fast travel back there and walk to the training ring if you waited too long.

Third Time's A CharmPermalink
The first time I played Assassin's Creed I did not finish it and when I came back a couple years later my save was corrupted. The second time I finished the story but messed up keeping track of flags. So I moved the save game to a device and started over again. This time I am doing my best to avoid collecting anything or killing anyone unless they are right there in my path. In that case, I'm making sure to mark them on my checklist that moment. I love the AC Maps website that finally came back up, the last time I had to use screenshots from a guide that did not help very much. This time I'm also marking them down on my Excel spreadsheet as I go in case my cookies disappear.
