PLOT Scramble is a side scrolling shooter where you control an airplane on a mission to destroy "the base". That is basically all the story there is in the game. This game was originally released back in 1981 as an arcade game. Scramble is made by Konami and is known as the father to the long running Gradius series.
GAMEPLAY This game is very simple and anyone can play it, but it will take patience and practice to master this game. Your ship has 2 weapons; a forward shooting machine gun and a downward bomb drop. You fly your ship through 6 levels, which all run together without a break. The first 5 levels you avoid rockets, fireballs, other ships, and the terrain while picking up fuel barrels to keep your ship from crashing. The 6th stage is the base where you simply drop a bomb and you have won. Then you start all over at level 1 and do it again with the difficulty increased, this continues until you use all 3 lives that you start with. You can complete all 6 levels and destroy the base in under 5 minutes.
GRAPHICS The game has been given updated graphics. They look much better than the original game, which looked like a primitive Atari game. Even with the new graphics, the game still looks pretty ugly.
ONLINE MULTIPLAYER This game has online versus and co-op modes that can be played in a ranked or player match. I have played online with a friend (which is the only way to find a game since there is no one playing this online) and the game was very laggy. The game would freeze and sometimes disconnect, which never happens to me on any other games with that same friend. Also, there is a vast online leaderboard for all different statistics. I am currently #5 in the world for this week and I did not even destroy the base, so that tells you how many people are still playing Scramble...not too many.
ACHIEVEMENTS You can pretty much complete 11 out of 12 achievements in one or two playthroughs of Scramble as long as you get to level 6 and destroy the base. Getting to level 6 is not that easy though, it will take some time to memorize the 6 levels. I destroyed the base after about 20 minutes, which by that time I had 11 out of 12 achievements. The final achievement is a tough one, complete all 6 levels and destroy the base without dying!! That is no easy task since this game can be very cheap and luck is also required. It took me a few days of trying before I was finally able to navigate perfectly to destroy the base. Just remember this game was designed to eat quarters back in 1981, so cheap deaths were designed purposely by Konami to take all your money.
FINAL GRADE 3/5 This game is short and sweet. You can beat the entire game in 20 minutes even if you have never played before. If you want to complete all the achievements you will need to perfect your skills in this game which could take you hours or even days. If you do not enjoy old school games you will not like this one at all. But, if you are like me and enjoy a blast from the past this will be $5 well spent.

A classic game that is well worth the $5 dollar price tag.
In this side-scrolling shooter, you play as a ship destine to destroy the enemies base. Along the way; you must maneuver over spiked rock formations, drop bombs on incoming targets, and avoid everything at all cost while keeping in mind you must destroy fuel containers to keep you moving.
The controls in this game are very simple. Use either the left analog stick, or the d-pad to change the direction of your ship: North, South, East, or West. Using the "A" button will shoot bullet straight forward at a high velocity, and using the "B" button will drop a bomb on unsuspecting enemies below.
The game consists of 6 levels. The first level has you flying over enemy ships and scrolling through an ever changing environment. You must drop your bombs on by-standards below, and dodge the ships lifting off from the ground. The second level mixes it up and has you hovering around orbs that move at an extraordinary speed. Shooting them is an option, but learning their movement patterns is a key element to this stage. Once you clear through all the shiny orbs, you are dumped straight into level 3. Here fireballs are lunged at you from the right side of the screen. Staying close to the bottom will prove to be vital to your survival. The fireballs move so fast, and so close in groups, that staying shielded by the spiked formations below will keep you safe. After the chaos that is the fireballs, comes the hardest level to master, level 4. Now you must predict where the ships will take off from and drop bombs with precision to clear your path. Staying sheltered above an empty enemy hole is the top priority here. This level will take time though, but with enough practice and patience, you will preserver into level 5. Here, shooting is only required to clear the gas tanks that block your path. This level will test how well you can maneuver though tight pathways, and how quick you are to thrust your ship to the correct height. Once you have mastered the art of scramble, you will be finalized with the arrival of level 6. Now is your chance to destroy the enemy base you have worked so hard to arrive at. Unless you are going for the Perfection achievement ( Which requires you to drop the bomb without losing a life throughout the play-through ) you don't have to worry about hitting the wall that lurks behind your target. What I've found successful in my many upon many runs through this game is that heading down after you pass the Konami sign, then left and down when its clear to head that way, shoot the base at the bottom, then fly back up as quickly as possible, and you will must likely avoid the wall. Once you either hit the wall, or surpass it, the game will begin to loop through the levels again, only now your gas meter will deplete faster. This can go on forever until you lose all your lives.
This is one of, if not the best arcade game I've played. It's short, with runs only taking about 5 minutes to clear the game, and game-play that keeps you coming back till you've mastered it. I can't recommend it enough. If anyone is looking for a cheap, brilliant arcade title, ( Achievements are pretty easy too ) then you must download this gem.
