Cabela's Big Game Hunter

Wow. I mean, really? Does Fun Labs and Activision really understand the consistent low-quality games they are producing? I don't mean to start off this review so harshly, but this game was a chore to play. For those interested, it is a very easy game to earn 1000 gamerscore in, thanks to Dmbledore and his guide (found at this link: http://www.dmbledore.com/biggamehunter/Walkthru/index.html). Lets get into it so you can know what it is you;re getting into.

I can recommend this game to those who enjoy the genre, actually, because this game is one of the better representations of the series. It plays like many other Cabela's titles, but also manages to inject it's idiosyncracies through a character and his experiences relayed to you, the player. The narrative was sadly annoying, as each chapter load and cut-scene featured the same attempted rough and tumbled voice of the main character. The game offers a unique combination of arcade and career hunts, all in one adventure, and it flows quite smoothly. Only occasionally will you find yourself wondering what in the world is going on.

Graphically, the games' environments can be stunning. The winter maps weather effects actually had me admiring them momentarily during the career. However, the characters and animals aren't as well rendered, and once an interaction of landscape and wildlife erupt, the visuals can be glitchy, and uninspiring.

The controls are very easy to manage, and the weapon select system is improved over Alaskan Adventures. Early on in the game, make yourself aware of what buttons you need to know, as achievement earners and actual players alike will utilize the maps and missions menus quite often.

A downside to this game is the real lack of replay value. If you use that guide linked above, you will literally finish all the games' achievements and earn all 1000 gamerscore in roughly 4-5 hours, depending on your skill. There is no point system or leaderboards per se, so there is no real competitive edge to really excel in it, so once finished, it's really done. Also, there is no multiplayer setting that could have been added. I would have liked to have seen an online arcade mode or something.

Overall, I was mildly impressed with the presentation, comfortable with the controls, but disappointed that it was over so quickly. It seems very apparent that it was put together quickly, and that the achievements seemed to be an afterthought. So to fans of the genre, go ahead and enjoy this title. To gamerscore earners out there, use that guide above and add an easy 1000 to your climbing gamerscore. To anyone else only somewhat interested, just avoid it.
