The first 2D styled fighter to come out in awhile that isnt' horrible. The last great US 2D fighter might have been one of the Guilty Gear games. There has been a long drought in this genre. Luckily, SF4 brings the rain.

All the hype surrounding it and it pulls through. Granted its not the best fighter to grace video games, but its still pretty damn good. Theres been a lot of effort put into this game and it shows. At first, there may seem to be some character balancing issues. Than you learn to play the game. You start to realize this isn't Street Fighter 2 or any of the Street Fighter Alphas. This game is its own beast and you have to treat it as such.

Thought the timing on combos are really REALLY strict, there not something you really need to rely on. They help to learn, but aren't really a full on requirement. The Focus and Focus Cancel system at first seem kinda weird and out of place. But once you understand how it works, it brings a new element and mindset to the gameplay.

Though its not recommended to play this game with the regular 360 gamepad, Capcom did a pretty good job of making this game work as much as possible with it. I was pleasantly suprised by that. When compared to playing Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, you can definitely see the difference in the controller department. Its not perfect, but it certainly isn't nearly as bad as ANY 2D fighter on a xbox controller.

There's plenty to do in this game too. Besides arcade mode and going online, you can also do the many Challenge options. The updated Survival and Time attack modes and some interesting new twists. (and are easy to beast through with Gief to boost if thats your thing) And I guarantee the combo Trial modes will keep you busy for sure. They're pretty difficult, but theres a reason for that.

The animated sequences are a pretty sweet addition. (though the anime that came with the special edition was pretty bad. But thats another story all together) And the option to switch between american and japanese voices is an option not seen nearly enough. Even better, Capcom made the feature so you can switch the voices for individual characters for if you prefer some of the american voices. That is just awesome.

Now for the online mode. There was something lacking originally with the regular lobbies with all the Rage Quits so people could boost points and win streaks. But they recently added a feature that shows when someone disconnects by adding a DC Ratio to there profile. So now people can choose wether or not to play such players. And the addition of the Championship mode helps players find where they belong in terms of skill level and motivates a player to get better and rise above there current skill level.

Keep in mind that online ranked and championship matches aren't really meant for the casual gamer. People take these modes pretty seriously. So for those that may get frustrated by hardcore competition, you should probably start off this Player matches and Free mode. Otherwise, you may find yourself frustrated and turned off by the community.

Is this game meant for the casual gamer? Probably not. But it couldn't hurt to rent it and try it out. Its definitly the kinda experience not many other games can deliver.

Remember back in 1991 when the beat 'em up genre of games was completely revolutionised?
Street Fighter 2 on the SNES was literally something you'd trade your grandma in for!

Now, nearly 2 decades later, Street Fighter 4 arrives on the XBOX 360 and PS3.
That's not to say there's been nothing inbetween. Street Fighter has spanned the arcades since 1987 and has seen multiple variations across a number of consoles including the Turbo GraFX, SNES, Panasonic 3DO, Nintendo Gameboy, Sony Playstation, Sega Dreamcast, PS2, XBOX and more.

What's great about this latest installation is that not a lot has really changed since the early days.
While most beat 'em ups have "progressed" to become set in full 3D environments, Street Fighter is still a classic 2D style fighter. However, while it remains 2D the game is built on a whole new 3D engine to give visuals never before seen in a beat 'em up game before.

On starting the game you'll quickly see that all of your favourite characters are back and looking better than ever. The game runs at a beautiful 60fps and the fluid movement of the characters and the way they move and respond to each other is incredible.

The game controls are much more forgiving than its predecessors. Capcom have got the balance between what your fingers are doing and what your brain is telling your fingers to do just right!
If you always struggled with Hadokens, Sonic Booms and Spinning Piledrivers you'll find them much easier to pull off here.

While the basic principle of the game remains the same in that you must empty your opponent's vitality bar before they empty yours, there is the addition of a number of new features such as Super Combos, Ultimate Combos and Focus Attacks all of which make the game more tactical and playable to the average gamer. In fact one of the great things about Street Fighter 4 is that literally anyone can pick it up and play it.

The depth of this game is truly amazing. There are a number of different modes of play including arcade mode, survival mode and time attack mode. The inclusion of XBOX Live play provides you with endless entertainment opportunities.

There are literally hours to be spent here.

Overall:

Graphics: 9
Soundtrack: 7
Gameplay: 10
Replay Value: 8

The fighting game everyone has been waiting for has arrived... Street Fighter IV!! And it's... great, well good I guess. I don't know maybe I'm missing the big picture here, but I really don't see why people are making such a BIG deal out of this game. It is an awesome fighting game and just an awesome game in general, but I mean there's nothing groundbreaking here. They've pretty much taken the same formula, look, and fighting system and put it in 3D.

Let's start off with the music first, I just want to put this out there... that song that plays at the main menu is so lame. K, now that that's out of the way let's get to the game play. It's pretty simple actually compared to most fighting games today. They really didn't bother with remaking the fighting system in this game, basically the controls are almost the exact same as every other 2D SF before it. Which I guess in itself isn't a bad thing but come on. This shit might have been groundbreaking and revolutionary to the development of fighting games 20 years ago, but it's 2009. Maybe it's time to step it up a bit?

Aside from your basic punches and kicks, you also have super and ultra combos. Most are pretty easy to perform and take out a solid chunk of health, but I'm surprised there aren't more. Speaking of health, it depletes way too quickly, especially if you use a focus attack (the cheapest move in the game).

The graphics are cool, a little too cartoony for my taste but that's great if you're into that style. Everything looks pretty slick and flows nicely. And you would think with such clean looking graphics they would make some sick looking cinematic endings for each character after beating arcade mode, but no. Instead each character's prologue and ending are hand drawn anime shorts. Now I'm already not a fan of anime at all, but this isn't even good anime. It's that goofy kind, complete with terrible voice acting and horrible speech animations. THEIR MOUTHS HARDLY MOVE! UGH! And they gave some of the characters the lamest voices, like Blanka and Akuma among others.

EDIT: I completely forgot to talk about the online playability when I first did this review, so I decided to go back and do it now. This means I'm going to have to bring the rating down to 3 stars because what I'm about to say about the online play isn't positive. In fact it sucks. Sure you can play other people online, but that's about as far as it goes. What a waste of potential. One of the greatest things about SF is fighting a bunch of people at once, arcade style. Where the winner fights until he loses. Sure people have always been able to do this at home on their couches with friends, but in the modern video game world where you have so much freedom online, why wouldn't you make this feature better?!?! They totally messed this up.

The achievements in this game are a pain in the ass to get, as are most fighting games. Unless you're a hardcore gamer, you ain't getting 1000 on this one. Hell, you'd be lucky to get 500 as a casual player like myself.

In conclusion this game is great, despite all the flaws I've pointed out in this review it's still a SF game and therefore still fun. They've always had good fun games and this is no exception. However I do find myself getting bored with the game very quickly, it doesn't have a lot of replay value. I only wish they would at least try something new because there is nothing special about this game. They just took the old SF games and prettied up the graphics for modern consoles. I know fanboys will hate me for saying that but that's just how I feel.

Final rating: 3 stars (EDIT: was 4 stars but I had to change it do to me remembering the online play sucks)

After playing the game I remembered the old days and I remembered how Street Fighter started and the way how it was evolved. Even my mother said haduken again.
The returning characters are made awesome looks and style, it was not hard to remember the moves and supers. Nice combination of combos and ultras. New Characters are pretty cool and sweet. The hardest part in the game is the trials to complete.

Cool game and Street Fighter FANS will not be disappointed because it is based on the 2D classic fighting. I enjoyed it
