In-A-Minute Review: NBA 2K10 Draft Combine
NBA 2K10 Draft Combine is a third person shooter from 2K Games. By that I mean, the game puts you in control of one character and in order to win you have to be the shooter on your team. While this is certainly a step in the right direction in terms of creating a more fundamentally realistic game- it does seem to be a little half baked.
I created my character and took a quick look at the achievements. I used this as my road map to playing the game. For the most part, earning achievements is the only way the game holds your interest. You play a few drills and the achievement unlocks. You play and win a few one quarter scrimmages and achievements unlock. You play through six full games and achievements unlock.
In summary, I guess I do like this concept. I think its smart marketing. I never would have considered buying NBA2K10... but after playing this I wondered what sort of cross over achievements the two games have in common. Are there are any other gameplay similarities?
If publishers want to put out little bite size samples of what's to come then I think that's a good thing. But then I thought about EA's March Madness XBLA title from last year and realized that NBA 2K10 Draft Combine is probably just a cynical marketing ploy and not a tip of the hat to fans who can't wait for the main release. In the end I had 200 gamerscore and felt a little bit dirty in the process.

Going into NBA 2K10 Draft Combine, my experience with NBA games on the Xbox was extremely limited. Part of what has scared me away was the fact that over the years it became less like a game and more like a simulation. Since I never played organized basketball, I generally don't have a clue what is expected of a position. I picked up Draft Combine for two reasons. First, it looked like a cheap and easy 200 points. Second, I saw it as a chance to cheaply try out NBA 2k10.
Gamplay - It centers around creating and growing a draft prospect that can be then imported into your full NBA 2k10 game. You will do drills, scrimmages, and combine draft games. After 6 draft games you are ranked and are ready to be exported to the full game.
Controls - Very frustrating if you never played a game like this before (or have limited experience). There is no tutorial, nor is most things fully explained. After playing for 3 hours, I still have no clue how to correctly shoot a foul shot. I think I understand the mechanics of the controls from the help, but there was little explanation to be found as to what makes a successful shot.
I am sure to yearly purchasers of NBA 2k series, this will be like picking up an old familiar friend.
Graphics - Everything looks to be good, and the game sounds like a basketball game. However the background music grated on my nerves after a while.
Longevity: The game does only one thing, guide a player from creation to draft. If understood correctly, it is meant to do so once. I did successfully delete my first save and start a new character, but I am unsure if you can upload more than one. If I understand the game correctly, you can scrimmage (5 minute games) til the end of time.
Gamer Score: Near impossible to not get the full 200 points on this. About the only thing that should stop you is not being able to stomach 15 - 5 minute scrimmages along with 6 - 20 minute draft games. But even if you just stand still through the time it will earn you the points.
Final thoughts: Overall the game seems to be good at what it does. If you have been playing every year's edition then this is a great way to get started on the newest one. However, for those of us that have no NBA 2K experience, you will be frustrated by lack of explanation and tutorials. Even if you don't know what you are doing, you can stumble through it and still collect all 200 Gamer Score.
Score: 3 Stars (Like it but it could of used better instructions/tutorials for the uninitiated)
