Second review - thoughts please, sorry if its not up to much
Before playing fifa 10 I wondered what EA could actually do to improve upon FIFA 09. I thought for a while and couldn't think of any new features they could add. Wrongly concluded that it was the year that fifa would be a simple squad update and maybe a few tweaks on the graphics. Its anything but
Everything except maybe the graphics have changed quite drastically.
The new 360 degree dribbling allows you to turn in any direction instead of the old 8 peripherals that limited other football games. This is especially usefull when dribbling down the line, allowing you to run down it without running off the pitch and lets you weave between players like never possible on previous games.
The new shoulder barging feature means strong players are vital in your team as its a major influence on the game. No longer can you sprint aimlessly down the line with the likes of Ronaldo and Messi, they'll end up getting pushed off the ball and you will lose possession. Instead quick "one, twos" and skillfull passing need to be mastered, making it ever more like a real match.
The crossing and long ball has also changed. The ball is now curled a lot more and is more accurate than FIFA 09 making it another key element of the game to master.
Shooting has also become more realistic, needing to be controlled more and not always heading straight for the corner with the push of an (RB) button. instead you have to move you players body position and align him more so with the goal to get that perfect shot to beat the keeper
Passing is pretty much the same, slightly improved and more reactive and consistent in power. Players and the referee alike will try their best to avoid the annoying situation of blocking your pass.
Manager mode is again practically the same, quite a lot of the achievements based on it, a new newspaper sponsored by sky sports is the only thing to really get "excited about" here . Although AI are more difficult to play against, but this can sometimes be a major downfall for me personally being at a standard level against AI, I find world class too hard and professional to easy, both of them making it become boring, either because your always winning or always losing.
Achievements I feel were lazy to be created, most of them just imitated from FIFA 09 which is disappointing. There are a few new ones, manager mode achievements a welcome addition, requested by many, but require you to play about 3 - 4 seasons different achievements conflicting with each other, which is a tedious prospect for those of you wanting to get all 1000G , on the whole not many fun achievements to work towards at about the same difficulty to achieve as the 09 ones
For anyone who hasn't purchased this yet and are looking at videos of FIFA 10 you may wonder whats different about it. You need to play the game, and you'll see what I mean. Initially the new control seems a disimprovement but once you get the hang of it and learn how to play better you will see it as a major improvement. Personally I found the demo lacking, but the demo is slightly different to the actual game and a few tweaks and improvements have been made.
For those of you who want a small snappy summary here it is...
Graphics : Similar to 09 slight improvement but nothing drastic 9/10
Game play : Overall a great new engine to the game, takes a bit of time to grasp it properly but once you do much better than 09 9/10
Sound : Commentary a little lacking, some copied from 09 and the new commentary quite average compared to other fifa's. New more realistic sounds like kicking the ball have been added as well as new crowd noises are a small constellation 7/10
Achievements : 70% of them have just been copied and pasted from fiaf 09, very lazy in my opinion but then again it is EA all their achievements seem to be like this. There are some new ones most of them rotating around manager mode, although alot of them conflict meaning you have to play 3-4 seasons, which is a long, boring process to follow through with to get 1000G.
I would definitely recommend this game as a must buy for any football fan and I wonder how I was ever entertained without it
until the next review, thanks for Reading

Note: I refuse to call this sport that us Brits call 'Soccer' like that the Americans. It's Football goddamn, so call it that!
Anyway, mini-rant over, today, I look at FIFA 10, the latest yearly football game released from those fine people at EA, which is based in Canada...What do they know about football?! Obviously a fair bit, because this is one exceptional football game.
When you crank it up, first thing you notice is that the arena is back from FIFA 09. Awesomeness. Also, instantly you can tell there's been a graphical upgrade from last years game. Players look more like themselves and generally speaking, it feels like FIFA 09, but freshened up a bit, so all plus points there.
One of the new features in this game is 'Virtual Pro', where you can create your own player, and build him up be a future superstar by having him achieve certain accomplishments like scoring from free kicks and scoring from long distances, all in order to improve their stats, in a similar system to Smackdown Vs Raw's Career Growth system. It works very well, and you can even import your own face into the game. Which is great, because it looks as if EA finally got that feature right, which is much better than previous games it's been used in, like Fight Night Round 4 where it looked...Bad.
Also new to the gameplay itself is that now the players dribble in complete 360 degrees. This is a much needed direction, as now the game feels a lot more realistic compared to previous games, something FIFA 09 was criticized for, as you could only dribble in 8 different directions.
Also, much improved has been the bulk of this game, which is Manager Mode. It's been a fresher look and revamp for 2010, and it's much better, it feels a lot more professional and organised as well, at some points, you actually feel like you're in complete control of a football club, without being overwhelmed like I had been in previous FIFA games. Also, Be A Pro seems to make a lot more sense now, in collaboration with Virtual Pro, it's like bread and butter. It just works, now, so Be A Pro feels a lot more appropriate, because you can actually improve as you play more.
The jewel in this games crown, like with last year, was the Online and League Play, as well as Be A Pro online, where 20 players at once can play the game together. Teamwork is required, but if you play well, the satisfaction is immense. Leagues are back, where you can represent a team online against other players in a League similarly to real life, which is great, and also clans, where people can play against other clans for bragging rights and recognition.
However, this game I have 2 major complaints over. Number 1, the achievements are harder and on the most part, very similar to FIFA 09. I don't like when developers get lazy. And another is that 65-70% of this game is FIFA 09, so you could warrant an argument that the game is very similar to last year. However, there's enough changes to make me believe that this is a much improved version of FIFA 09, which is exactly what this game needed to be.
And this is why FIFA 10 is probably the best football game ever made. It does everything a football game could do for you, and it's one of those games you'll just keep coming back to, so you'll certainly get your moneys worth if you're a football fan, and therefore, this a must buy.
Graphics: 90/100 - Outstanding
Gives you the real footballing experience. Looks gorgeous.
Audio: 95/100 - Incredible
Typical EA, always doing that great job of creating the atmosphere of being at an actual football match. Awesome soundtrack too.
Gameplay: 90/100 - Outstanding
New controls and the addition of custom set plays add a new dimension to the experience, that improves it from FIFA 09.
Lasting Appeal: 100/100 - Perfection
With Manager Mode being improved, Virtual Pro, Be A Pro, and tons of Online Options, you're probably going to invest A LOT of hours into this game.
Overall Score: 93/100 - Outstanding |
