Front Mission Evolved, while being a drastic departure from previous entries into the series, is an amazingly fun game. While I knew when purchasing the game that it would not be what I had played in past Front Mission games on the Playstation 2, I did not expect it to be such a high quality game.
To start with, like just about every other action / shooter game out there, the storyline is extremely short. Even on hard difficulty, if you are not out looking for beacons and sensors, you can breeze through the game in 2 - 3 hours. The voice acting is decent, but certainly not top-notch. This is compounded by the sometimes over the top writing and cheesy one-liners, but let's be honest - isn't this what we've come to expect from Japanese games? The cut-scenes are nice eye candy, and the storyline is passable, if a bit contrived.
Overall, the graphical quality of the game is excellent. I didn't have any issues with slowdown or freezing no matter how busy the game got - which often can be very busy. The sound quality is decent as well, with the exception of the sometimes overly dramatic voice acting.
As I stated earlier, this is not like past Front Mission games. While previous games were tactical mech games in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre with a twist, Front Mission Evolved is more akin to the action shooter mech series Armored Core. To be quite honest, I found this game reminded me quite a bit of AC2 - a game I am still fond of to this day.
Similar to Armored Core 2, this game has no end to mech customization. There are well over 20 different mechs to choose from, each part being matchable with any other. Three main styles (Biped for quick movement, Quad for heavy artillery, hover for water-based combat) are established depending on your play style, with a multitude of weapons and support abilities to mix and match.
The controls in this game are beautiful, with one exception. While the mechs control amazingly, there are sections of the game which require you to get out and hoof it. These sections are a ding in an otherwise amazing single player experience. I definitely could've done without these, and exchanged them for more of the helicopter scenes. "Skating" in your mech is fun, and the controls are surprisingly responsive, especially in a heavy firefight.
The multiplayer, while extremely fun is more or less a dead zone. Do not expect to be able to rank up on your own with any speed. If you sit in a lobby for 2 - 3 hrs a day during prime time you may luck out and get a match or three, but this will take you months to hit 70.
The achievements in this game are all rather easy, with the exception of the sensors, My Zero Hero, and Team Player. These three, while time consuming, are not difficult. I was able to get all but these three in a single play through of the game. If you actively boost, time to 1k would probably be a week - almost all of that time spent on Zero Hero. While boosting, I averaged 10,000 - 15,000XP per hour using the alternating kill method.
Overview: Visual: 4 / 5 Good graphics, but the environments are a little repetitive.
Controls: 4.5 / 5 Would be 5 / 5 if not for those single player, human sections.
Sound: 3 / 5 Music could be cut and paste from any other action shooter game. Voice acting is slightly better than mediocre. Mech Effects are where this game's sound shines.
Achievements: 4.5 / 5 All easy, only a few time consuming, only one was a little frustrating. With careful planning from the start, even the sensors won't be an issue. Time to 1k: 20 - 22 hrs.
Fun Factor & Replay: 3 / 5 While this game is definitely fun, unfortunately due to dead multiplayer servers, it is not likely to have a lasting place in your console. The campaign is short, and 100% completion (including side objectives and achievements) in under 10 hours.

in short: the game is verry short. if you had played any front mission game before this, you will find this one to be a disapointment. if you like mech games in general, then this game is right for you. but the game is still short. you can rent this game and have it completed before you have to return it. in fact that is what i sugest you do. the only part of this game that offers any challange is finding the random collectable items in every level. that is the extent of the difficulty in this game.
in conclusion: rent. do not buy(unless you can find it for dirt cheap). this game dose not hold up to the front mission story telling history. the game is extreemly short.
