FIFA 10 was the golden child of EA for the entire of last year with it only just dropping out of most top 20 charts with the launch of its older brother FIFA 11. What can EA possibly do to improve on the success they had with 10? Some say that it is impossible to improve the game further, so will EA have another gem on their hands or will they have managed to ruin all that FIFA 10 worked so hard to create?

EA have always prided themselves on FIFA being a true replication of the real life game with FIFA 10 introducing 360 dribbling we were closer to reality than we ever had been and with EA also adding Virtual Pro to the line-up allowing you to create a single player and watch him progress into superstardom. FIFA 11 builds on these additions well with the addition of Personality Plus, this means that players won’t just look like the real thing they will now act like their real life counterparts to with traits improving running, shooting, dribbling, heading, etc for some of the superstars of the game. So if you are an avid fan of the game and you know that a player like Drogba is a powerhouse he will have increased strength as a result making him act like a powerhouse in the game to without it ever feeling like the balance of the game is affected.

This year EA have introduced a new passing and jostle system and sadly both are flawed, firstly the passing system now works on a power basis the longer you hold down the A button the more power the pass will have this is a great addition in theory and can really add some much needed weight to the game however most of the time you want to play a hard pass to the player closest to you and due to you holding down the button the AI thinks that you wish to play a ball to a player further away which causes nothing but annoyance and problems especially when you can see the ball you want to play but the AI just won’t play it. The second is an improved jostle system meaning that bigger stronger defenders will easily be able to knock smaller players off the ball but it also means that smaller players will be able to run rings around the bigger players however it doesn’t work out that way when put into practice and the game is very unbalanced towards the bigger player and will win the jostle 9 times out of 10 making building attacks a frustrating affair.

While I’m on the negatives I might as well talk about the problem that has always bugged every FIFA release including the brilliance that was 10 and that is the AI. I would have thought for this release EA would have spent a large amount of time trying to fix this but sadly not, although there is some improvement and things do seem tighter with players you’re not in direct control of there is still way too much stupidity in a game of this calibre. Firstly the defence will still leave massive gaps at the back that just wouldn’t occur in the real game leading to many frustrating moments when an opponent is just left standing there waiting for someone to put him in, on the flip side though the defenders hold the line much better unlike in FIFA 10 where either the left or right back would play everyone onside. Also when you are not in direct control of a player they seem to lack any sort of energy they won’t sprint back when you don’t have the ball and they won’t even try and go for a pass if it isn’t directly at them, the final nail in the AI’s coffin is player runs in FIFA 10 these were fantastic you clicked LB and a player would run straight through the defence allowing for a through ball however in 11 clicking the LB causes your striker partner to have a fit and start running towards you or basically just running anywhere that you can’t pass to them which can become so annoying when you can see the space you want them to run into you click the left bumper and then they decide they would rather come and have a hug instead.

The gameplay in FIFA 11 is as solid as expected from a FIFA title but that is only thanks to what FIFA 10 created and although none of the new gameplay additions to 11 seriously harm the overall playability of the game they do little or nothing to improve it and mainly just lead to some of the more problematic moments in the game.

A new addition that has been brought in for 11 is the chance to play as the goalkeeper an option that was removed from FIFA 10 due to it not working to well, but this year it’s back and has had a pretty good overhaul done on it and with the inclusion of the new Be A Pro Goalkeeper mode you finally have the chance to overcome the stupidity of the goalkeeping AI in FIFA. Being a goalkeeper is simple enough to grasp you move around with the left stick and move the right stick to dive in the direction you wish to, with X allowing you dive at a players feet and Y making you rush off your line. Sadly it all seems a little to controlled to be classed as fun because after you choose a direction to dive the AI takes over in order to the make the save which leaves you feeling a little underappreciated in the role but don’t get me wrong when you make a save it makes you feel very good about yourself. Another good addition with the ability to control the goalkeeper is 11 vs 11 Be A Pro matches which brings the game to a whole new level of realism and is actually pretty fun to play in.

Another new addition is the “Career Mode” but this is basically just modes from FIFA 10 lumped under one category as when you enter you can choose between a be a pro season, manager mode or manager mode where your pro is part of your squad. A new tweak in all these modes is the use of a calendar system allowing you to simulate all the matches in a season if you so wish by skipping ahead to a date of your choosing this is a welcome addition to the game as opposed to 10 where you had to simulate each match separately. The design of all 3 modes is identical with the same player hub, stats and leagues no matter which of the 3 you pick.

Two welcome additions to FIFA 11 are the Creation Centre which allows you to create a brand new team from scratch including name, kit, badge, players and then import that team to be used in all offline and unranked modes in the game. As well as this you can now import your own custom soundtrack into the game using music from your HDD allowing you to choose what music plays when you score a goal or when the teams come out onto the pitch.

In conclusion FIFA 11 isn’t the same step up that FIFA 10 was however that was expected sadly however it would appear that in fixing some of the problems that appeared in FIFA 10 they have created a new set of problems in 11 and still haven’t fixed all of the old problems leaving you feeling very frustrated at times. A few of the new additions are welcome such as the custom tracks and personality plus items but they do little to really move the series any farther forward than it was before. However the game is still as solid as ever as a whole and with the inclusion of a few new modes and no doubt Ultimate Team 11 on the way there is plenty to keep you occupied until the release of FIFA 12.

Firstly this game has so many glitches (online) which will annoy you if you are achievement hunting, but you will eventually unlock them. You just have to have patience. However If you are looking to have a laugh then this is a must but in my opinion. As I have countless times when playing with other members.

A let down is the online pass , but it is worth it. Get this game if your any of your friends have it! I have lost my temper with this game and so have many others who I have played with. But we are G hunters. A now Fifa 11 Ultimate Team is free. Due to the fact that when this game was released a mass number of purchases were made.

Ok, now for some aspect of this game, a new aspect which has been introduced is Pro Passing, this is where a person who has good passes which deliver good passes, those who don't will not. This works 50/50, when you try and pass but you got that rubbish player.....you going to struggle, however when it's your opponent you maybe happy. Another advantage of Pro Passing is that it eliminates 'Ping Pong Passing', this is in series before Fifa 11, where players could pass, pass and pass without running which you would struggle to do in Fifa 11 now.

I must say though the 360 dribbling has improved a lot more, fluency- you can feel it and see it. The graphics on this game are quite remarkable, mostly all the players resemble who they are meant to look like. And not only the face, but the style of their run, their body ect.

One massive bug in this game is button lag. Button lag is only occurs when you play a Pro Club match, those of you who are wondering what is button lag I'll elaborate; for instance saying if you have button lag and you want to pass it to your friend who is right in front you you, you'll press A but there will be a delay this could b from 1-5 seconds. Another bug is just general lag, in this game it is rare to play a game without any problems. So remember to keep your patience.

Manager mode has improved as you don't have that 'Player Interested' aspect that was on Fifa 10. But overall I personally think one of the best Fifa games going.

Terribly glitched achievements.

From an achievement standpoint, this game is frustrating bordering on the farcical. If you sadly have this game and would like to get the 100% completion - you're in for a shock. Achievements requiring x number of games played most of the time won't unlock when those targets are met - i.e. 100 head to head and 50 pro clubs games.

As EA have decided to shut this server down on the 11th January, I've decided to give my honest opinion on this game. Its a decent football game, but its too glitchy for my liking. Game modes are decent, but playing online is awful and if you play and beat someone fairly, the opponent will dashboard it so your game doesn't register that match as a win. Pro clubs is good although you will only find decent players who have maxed out their characters so they will be fast wingers who have Kenyan like stamina. Not fun at all especially if you're starting out as they will pretty much slaughter noobies.

An okay game, but I won't be paying for any more EA/Fifa games in future due to EA's shoddy work - especially with some of the online achievements.
