The First Templar is a hack and slash game based loosely around the Templar legends and one knight's quest to recover the Grail. While I am usually pretty generous in my assessments of games that do not rate very well, I give this game a 2.5 stars rating out of 5 for the following reasons:

First the good points:
1) achievements are not overly difficult
2) combat is fairly simple involving minimal combat combos.
3) leveling system is quick and allows adequate skills / protection that compensate appropriately for hard difficulty
4) game provides both stealth and lethal gameplay
5) co-op play (both online and split screen)

Draw
1) AI: The AI is helpful most of the time, but they will often loose lots of health, especially in tomb / trap areas.
2) Graphics and sound: not terrible, but not great either
3) Length of the game: Is longer than I personally wanted, but some may appreciate it.
4) While the game allows you to revisit levels, it resets your regular and bonus objective progress. It does save collectibles.

Now the bad:
1) general movement through the world is "clunky" - the heroes wobble along with what sounds like water in their boots. While I understand that they are wearing mail, it still got aggrivating to listen to.
2) The Environment:, while providing some freedom movement, was overall very limited. While you can get here and there fairly easily, your characters cannot jump (except logs), thus making it sometimes difficult to get out of areas. Once I was off the beaten path, I often found getting out took a while because I was stuck behind a pebble, small fence, bush, etc. It got frustrating.
3) Bad Camera Angles: Combat was frequently obscured by trees, stones, or was too close to see when you needed to. Even outside of combat, the characters could not really look around (up) especially in tombs
4) Story and characters have no real depth. You will probably be skipping the cutscenes halfway through the game.

Those of you who have played Assassin's Creed will be familiar with the feel of this game. It has a similar story arc, similar missions (follow x without being detected, use the catapult, sneak around), and environmental settings. But that is where the similarities end. The gameplay is very linear and the story is weak. If this game came out 5 or 10 years ago, it would be great, but in the end it feels like it was a cheap, watered-down knockoff of AC devolped by a team of new guys. While it is not the worst game you will ever play, you will probably be upset with yourself if you pay more than $10.
