While I am new to flight simulators, I am not one to turn away from free games. And with this motivation I picked up Microsoft Flight on PC.

The free portion of the game is centered on the big island of Hawaii (with the other islands for sale in the first DLC pack) and comes with one classic airplane and one modern plane to fly. The game immediately starts with a tutorial to educate you on flying the modern plane, and then walks you through the process of using the flight board. From here you can turn yourself loose to free fly, take jobs to earn experience, attempt challenges, search for collectables, or continue to learn to fly the two included planes.

The game itself works with just mouse and keyboard, and does so amazingly well. However, if you have a controller the game instantly adjusts to this and even the on screen prompts change. Since I do not have a controller, I can only speak of the mouse which is responsive.

The graphics look amazing (at least the videos of the graphics look amazing, I am stuck in low everything due to an onboard graphics chip), but even with my low quality settings the game mostly handles well with only a few studders along the way. From the blocky details I can see, it appears they have painstakingly mapped and digitized every square inch of the big island.

Also included is the ability to fly around with others, and this would have only been complemented by the ability to dog-fight, but alas this is a flight simulator not a combat flight simulator. So I am stuck with just scaring the crap out of my virtual paying customers as I am a horrible pilot.

One nice feature of the job board, it that every mission states the estimated time complete. So if you are short on time, you can get a good idea if a task can be completed. You also are ranked based on your performance so there is incentive to replay missions in order to maximize the XP earned. The XP is used to level you up and cause unlocks in the game environment. So far that has just been to make things look different (color of plane, badges, etc), but for an achievement hunter there is plenty to hunt.

In conclusion, if you have time to kill this is a fairly free way to do so. I have not experienced a feeling of needing to buy something, but they do make it apparently that the option is there.
