Heavy Gear Coming To Consoles

Tabletop RPG/miniatures franchise gets first video game in a decade

Written by Dog of Thunder on 03 August 12 at 19:46

Dream Pod 9, the company behind the Heavy Gear franchise that spans RPGs (including a new d20 system), miniatures, card games and hobby supplies announced today that they would be adding modern consoles to their stable with a new Heavy Gear videogame. The world of Heavy Gear takes place in the year 6132 on the planet Terra Nova, cut off from the rest of humanity after the collapse of the Human Concordat. This has led to the rise of powerful city-states on Terra Nova which vie for land, resources and domiance using advanced walker suits called "Gears". Crewed by a brave soldier, or perhaps a small unit of them based off of the size of the Gear, these suits have a wide variety of design and purpose.

Dream Pod 9 has hired Stompy Bot Productions to handle the development of Heavy Gear. While Dream Pod 9 gave no details as to if this game will be retail or arcade, Stompy Bot Productions specializes in digital games, making it likely that Heavy Gear will be a XBLA title.

When more information on the title becomes available, we will be sure to let you know.

The exact direction of the game is unknown, but the tabletop game covers both a d20 system and a miniatures war game. Lots of ways for the video game to go.

I'll reserve any judgement untill they release more on it. Some screens and videos.

I'll be buying this even if only to support the franchise. Even without the digital history of the devs id of guessed.arcade for this. Gameplay wise I reckon it'll be fairly standard mech combat, which generally involves a decent amount of customisation anyway. They could possibly add an RPG element ina quest format but I wouldn't expect much free roam outside if set mission boundaries.

I still have a PC built for running MechWarrior 4 and Heavy Gears 2 with a Saitek X45 (HOTAS). Would love to see Heavy Gears become a mech shooter on the 360.

I kinda hope its like Front Mission 3 from the PSX or Front Mission 4 from PS2. I liked those kinds of Mech Tactics games.

Got to tell a friend about this, seems like something he'd like. Is it like axis and allies at all (not in theme/setting, but in gameplay style)

Did I just read this right?

YES!
Can remember when I used to play Heavy Gear on the PC, absolutely loved it, used to watch the animated series too on Fox Kids / Jetix, was great.
