You may or may not have noticed in the announcement above about the Specializations that you can earn while playing the various game modes in Halo 4. To help us understand what Specializations are, 343 Industries has this to say.

During their Spartan careers, players are offered Specializations through a variety of channels, allowing them to enlist in specific rank paths that come with armor sets, armor mods, emblems, and a variety of other components. Once a player has advanced through the standard fifty (50) rank levels allotted to Spartans, they will have access to a selection of Specializations. These paths are composed of ten rank levels each, which the player, once opting for the Specialization, must complete in order to improve their rank and before being allowed to enlist in a separate Specialization.

Each Specialization unlocks the following items as you progress across its 10 levels:

• Armor Mod
• Armor Set – Helmet, Chest, Left Shoulder, Right Shoulder
• Armor Set Skin – Texture skin for Helmet, Chest, Left Shoulder, Right Shoulder
• Weapon Skin – Texture skin of one of the loadout weapons
• 4 Foreground Emblems
• 1 Background Emblem
• 1 Visor Color
Now that you have a general idea of what Specializations are and how to earn them, we will now go into more specific details of all eight below.

ENGINEER

Spartan optimization for the subversion, repair, and or reconstitution of a wide range of technology, including Covenant and Forerunner complex networks.

The Drop Recon armor mod allows users to predict the location and time of an ordnance drop through an external suborbital monitoring system.

Engineer Specialization
Specialization Engineer

OPERATOR

Spartan optimization for the operation and control of a wide range of vehicles: space, air, ground, and sea.

The Wheelman armor mod gives Spartans the ability to coax every bit of stamina and durability out of vehicles they are piloting.

Operator Specialization
Specialization Operator

PATHFINDER

Spartan optimization for deep, unconventional deployment within unknown enemy territory and with little to no assistance from command.

The Gunner armor mod decreases the time of weapon overheat when occupying a vehicle weapon position and increases Spartan speed while carrying a detached turret.

Pathfinder Specialization
Specialization Pathfinder

PIONEER

Spartan optimization for deployment into uncharted, hostile territory, such as uncolonized worlds or Forerunner constructs like Requiem, for the purpose of gathering and relaying information.

The Fast Track armor mod allows Spartans to gain more experiential data from each encounter, effectively ranking up quicker during the process.

This Specialization will be available at launch.

Pioneer Specialization
Specialization Pioneer

ROGUE

Spartan optimization for single-operative missions which require a lone Spartan to be deployed on their own for incredibly long durations of time, even years if required.

The Stability armor mod allows users to increase their aiming stability when being fired upon.

Rouge Specialization
Specialization Rogue

STALKER

Spartan optimization for target shadowing missions which require tactical invisibility despite operating at an extremely close range to the target itself.

The Nemesis armor mod allows users to target and track down previous attacking enemies, highlighting them on the armor’s passive sensors.

Stalker Specialization
Specialization Stalker

TRACKER

Spartan optimization for long-range target tracking (trans-continent and off-world), particularly in scenarios where conventional tracking has failed or such a substantial time has passed that the trail has gone cold.

The Requisition armor mod allows users the ability to recall their own ordnance requests in order to acquire more helpful weapons in the field.

Tracker Specialization
Specialization Tracker

WETWORK

Spartan optimization for stealth operations which focus on the elimination of an enemy target with the goal of leaving no tactical footprint behind.

The Stealth armor mod allows users to move quickly and silently in combat, executing enemy assassinations with lightning fast dexterity.

Wetwork Specialization

All this will expand your Halo 4 multiplayer experience while you serve on-board the largest starship in the UNSC fleet the UNSC Infinity. On-board the Infinity you will have the ability to customize your Spartan-IV and participate in the many competitive War Game modes, as well as the episodic Spartan Ops campaign, all while following your Spartan's Career throughout the mulitplayer experience.

Earn experience and unlock all-new Specializations in both Spartan Ops and War Games as you earn new ranks. In addition, the “Halo 4” Limited Edition sku and “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass will provide even more opportunities to establish your legacy on the battlefield.

Activate Specializations to Earn New Ranks and Equipment
With eight Specializations in “Halo 4,” you can achieve higher ranks in your Spartan career once you progress beyond level 50. As you level up through these dedicated paths, you will earn a bristling arsenal of combat-enhancing armour mods that provide even more options to customise your Spartan-IV to fit your preferred role on the battlefield. In addition, armour sets, emblems, visor colours, weapon and armour skins unique to each Specialization distinguish your Spartan-IV from other players in “Halo” Infinity Multiplayer.

Two Specializations – Wetwork and Pioneer – will be available to all players when “Halo 4” launches on 6 November. The remaining six Specializations are available by pre-ordering the standard Halo 4 game exclusively at GAME and gamestation stores. Alternatively, all eight Specializations are included in the “Halo 4” Limited Edition. All Specializations will gradually be made available to download through Xbox LIVE in the months following launch.
Halo 4 will be launching worldwide on November 6th. We're looking forward to seeing you all on the battlefield!

I know I shouldn't care, since I have the LE preordered, but the idea of having game-changing perks locked up for anyone who doesn't preorder or purchase the more expensive edition feels wrong.

I heard something about a subscription service for halo... is this true? And if so, wtf are we paying gold memberships for if companies are wanting subscriptions for their single games?

Damn it, really regretting ordering the standard edition. All those features look well worth it for the extra £30. Well, I'll be getting all the DLC regardless, but the early access to Specializations would have been great.
Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather...

Been has this pre-ordered at BestBuy since it was announced w/o knowing WTF was included. Welcome back Chief.
Best Buy's $20.00 Reward Zone Gamer Club "Unlocked" coupons per pre-order on select titles made it an even easier decision, though I would have bought the LE regardless.

Buy a 4000 season pass and save like 1200 msp or something. I don't remember exactly.

stupid going to be a good game but what a way to say give us your money or your going to be at a disadvantage from day one. The stupid rogue one is going to one of the most sought after specially combined with the dmr or the br its just going to turn combat on its head.

Good to know I didn't pre-order it for nothing. Still, that is kinda messed up not giving much content to regular buyers and may actually hurt later sales as the longevity of the game may be hampered.
