Project Needlemouse is Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Oh, happy days!

Posted by zigs00 on 04 February 10 at 16:51

The previously codenamed Project Needlemouse has had its real name announced today, and oh boy, does it make me happy. Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Episode I. Yep, Sonic 4. Yep, episodic Sonic. Yep, I'm super excited.

The game is a sequel to the Mega Drive/Genesis series of iconic Sonic games, more specifically a direct sequel to 1994's Sonic and Knuckles. Only took sixteen years, but better late than never, Sonic Team?

The game will be a Mega Man 9 style HD restoration of the 2D platformer, starring only Sonic (as you read here: Project Needlemouse Will Only Star Sonic), and a real emphasis placed back on speed.

The plot of the game also seems wonderfully simple, similar to the 16-bit games, easily summed up in only three sentences: "With the Death Egg finally destroyed, and Angel Island back in the sky, Sonic decides it's time to take a break and heads off to explore a new territory on his own. However unbeknownst to Sonic, Eggman has also survived their last encounter, and has begun taking measures to rid himself of our hero. Armed with his signature Speed, super Spin Dash - and powerful Homing Attack, Sonic is ready for an all-new adventure! " No werehogs, no human-on-hedgehog kissing, no origin stories, no bullshit. Just blissful Sonic, as simple as it should be.

A new teaser trailer accompanyed the announcement, showing roughly three seconds of ingame footage. Still worth watching, for sure. The trailer also reveals that the game will be XBLA as opposed to retail, and scheduled for release in the summer. To watch the trailer, check the external link below.

The game also has a new website (http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.com), which currently has a number of hidden information on it, and timers counting down towards new announcements. Keep your eyes peeled, hedgehog fans!

I remain unimpressed. Sonic 2d was good back in the day, but that was back in the day.

What we needed was an entire game built around Sonic Unleashed day missions, they were what sonic should be now.

I'm with you zigs... I love old school sonic, but I've been burned too many times. I'll wait for the demo before I get excited.

Now Sonic Team get on Chu Chu Rocket for XBLA.

Sonic Adventure was amazing, but so were the original 2D games. So i'm very excited for this and it's episode 1 meaning were gonna get lots more hopefully.

I'd also like to see Chu Chu Rocket, they should give it away free again like on the DC (because they're made of money >_< ) .

Has it explicitly been said anywhere that sonic 4 is DLC, or am I just assuming it will be?

The page ( http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.com/us/ ) says "Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare and ???" in the top right.

Sonic & Knuckles is amazing. I'm slightly scared since Sonics been 3dified. If it was simply amazing HD sprites I would be way more happier.

It does say so in the original gamespot article.

I don't have high expectations for any new Sonic game, but this news means I can at least hope. I would also have been fine with on-rail sections with a behind-the-hog camera (like modern versions of the Sonic 2 bonus stages).

A sequel to S3&K? About time!

Now, since it's gonna be all fancy HD style, have they written the guys at OC ReMix about doing the soundtrack yet?

Why is this an arcade game?
*Yawns*
All of my minimal excitement that I had been mildly building up by playing Sonic 2 again is now diminished. I'll let you guys play it first and lemme know if it's worth anything. Otherwise sounds like DOTW material to me all ready....

meh, to me Sonic has lost his charm long ago, I'll leave it a nostalgic memory. Might be worth it if it has decent cheevos, otherwise I'll be steering clear.

They are, Sonic Adventures is coming to the XBLA.

As for Sonic 4 I'm looking forward to it, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I loved replaying the other ones on the arcade and it is good to see more companies trying the retro approach, but Sega has made way too many ridiculous decisions over the past decade. They are going to have to earn my trust back, before I put any faith in them.

I'd blow 4000 points on that game if it included live play and leaderboards.

I'm VERY excited for this. I was a HUGE Sonic fan back in the Genesis days. I still have posters all over my room, own nearly every original series Sonic comic book (all except that elusive issue 1), and had my friends call me Sonic in primary school. This is one of those things that I'm extremely happy to see because the 3D just doesn't work for Sonic like it has had for Mario. At least Sega had enough sense to give this like an HD update with the same side-scrolling action.
