REMINDER: Xbox v1 Servers Closing on April 15th

A moment of silence for the passing of a giant

Hey guys and gals. I figured this topic would be worth a bump just to remind everyone that you only have a couple of days left to play you original Xbox games over Xbox Live, with the servers set to permanently shut down on April 15th, sparking the end of the first era for Xbox Live. General Xbox Live Manager Marc Whitten explains it best:

On April 15 we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. I want to start by saying this isn’t a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community.

Original story:
In the beginning, gamers had to coordinate LAN parties, exchange phone numbers, set dates and times, or jump through a myriad of other hoops in order to play on-line with their friends. Some publishers helped you out with their particular game, but there was no overarching service for all games and all users, well, none worth mentioning Sony, until Xbox Live. With one service, Xbox brought all gamers together to play anytime anyone was on. More for coordination, people were always available.

Today we commemorate the truly visionary advancements to on-line gaming founded on Xbox Live and evolved on the Xbox 360 Live service. Announced only a few hours ago by Marc Whitten and Major Nelson, the Xbox live Service for original games and consoles will be discontinued on April 15th, 2010. Though they state this decision was not made easily, they feel that it will help improve future updates and usher bigger and better updates for the current Live Service.

The following games will no longer be available on Live:

Halo 2
Counter-Strike
Burnout 3
Burnout Revenge
Ghost Recon
Call of Duty 2
Dead or Alive Ultimate
Doom 3
Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Battlefield 2
Forza
Rainbow Six 3
Call of Duty 3
Mechassault 2
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Crimson Skies

Though some of these title will be impacted less than others, still there is a pang of regret to see their on-line shut down.

Microsoft assures us that this change will be for the best in the next year and I for one hope they are right. In the meantime, if you own any of these games, log in, kick back, and remember the glory days for last time while you still can. You may be surprised to see/remember just how far games have come since these titles were the cream of the crop.

EDIT: Due to some confusion, I should try and clarify one point. This will ONLY effect Xbox Original games. If you have a game like CoD3 that was released for both systems at the same time. The 360 version is safe, only the original Xbox version is being shut down.

Wait, cod2/3?

They better not mean the 360 versions. Burnout revenge also.

If you're still playing Halo 2 on XBL, you're probably the type that is hardcore enough to play Halo 2 on LAN parties (or XB Connect).

I hope this does free up some of Microsoft's resources to focus more on the current generation. I loved some of those games, but I haven't played them in years and probably won't for several more years.

This is definitely incentive for me to boot up my Halo 2 again over the next two months...I've never played another shooter quite as much as I did that one.

If its for the sake of bigger friends lists and better xbox live services, its probably the time to move on.

Wow, it makes what EA does seem less evil :) -- this won't effect me, I don't have an original Xbox or any original Xbox games.

Terrible headline, I thought someone in the industry had died, not that this was the xbox live closure story that I've been hearing about all day.

This is sad news. I loved Star Wars Battlefront 2 online, (no mention of Battlefront 1 though?), and I will be very sorry to see the online aspect disappear. I will also greatly miss the fun of playing Halo 2 online....

Yes, it's progress; yes, it's for some or other greater good, but it's sad to see the (online) passing of such incredible games. Lets all play the hell out of them before April 15th!
When is there going to be a decent World War 1 flying game released??

Really?
The original Xbox came out in 2001, and Microsoft have been supporting its LIVE functionality within its first year, which is far longer than any other company supports their consoles, especially considering the 360 came out 2005. I was surprised to hear that the Xbox still has LIVE access to be honest.

The servers being shut will benefit us X360 users, like Mike said enough, there won't be a cap on the friends list anymore, for example.

For those asking, this won't affect the 360 versions of those games (COD3, etc.) nor Windows Live (Halo 2) but it should resolve the conflict that limits your friends list to 100 contacts.

Rest in Peace. These games will not be forgotten!
It's a shame to see these games go. I better start going back to play these games online. Back then was a better time. When we didn't have to worry about achievments or ratios!
Feels good man.

At least it's on PC I guess. I just need to figure out why in the world mine keeps crashing even though I can easily play Gears of War which I assume has much higher requirements.

Damn you PC gaming.

Wait! (and sorry for being stupid) are these games just getting shut down for the original xbox? or are the servers going offline for the 360 as well?

Thanks, I was just going to ask if this affected Halo 2 on the PC ... been meaning to pick that up for a while now.

Funny, Gears of War (PC) crashes constantly for me and the friends I played with. So much so that I just quit a while back ... another one to finish off, I guess.

I don't know how else to put this...Live just simply won't exist for original xbox games anymore. This has nothing to do with 360 games Mike.
