The Pinball Arcade Picks Up New Licenses

The Pinball Arcade Picks Up New Licenses

Cult pinball action with Star Trek: The Next Generation and Elvira

Written by ChewieOnIce on 10 September 12 at 16:36

Developers FarSight Studios have announced that they've managed to secure some new licenses for upcoming tables on The Pinball Arcade, through the game's official facebook page.

Back in the middle of August, FarSight launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise enough cash to secure the full license to the popular "Star Trek: The Next Generation" table, with the following explanation of the need for the campaign:

We’ve succeeded in negotiating all of the licenses we’d need to digitize Star Trek: The Next Generation and bring it to the Pinball Arcade. Unfortunately there are several licenses involved: in addition to the Williams license, we need a license for the Star Trek property and the Star Trek: The Next Generation series, clearances for the actor likenesses on the back glass and play field, and the right to use the actor voiceovers during gameplay. When we add up the costs of each required license and calculate what we’d have to charge for the table, we’ve realized that the Star Trek: The Next Generation is just not commercially viable. The more we charge for the table the fewer people will be able to buy it- and our goal is to expose as many people as possible to this great table, not just a select few.Today, FarSight confirmed that they have met their goal and will be able to secure the full license:

It's fitting that today is the 46th anniversary ...of the airing of the first Star Trek episode. We're proud to carry on the Star Trek legacy- on behalf of the entire team here at FarSight Studios, thank you for backing us! Star Trek: The Next Generation will definitely be coming your way! They have also managed to secure a license with Mistress of the Dark, Elvira, and will now be able to also bring the "Scared Stiff and Elvira and the Party Monsters" tables to the collection.

The 60 year old horror hostess herself has even posted a video announcing the news:

There's no word yet on when these tables will be coming to The Pinball Arcade, but keep an eye out on TA for more details as they emarge.

The only thing I worry about is that these great licenses won't make it to XBLA because of lack of interest in the title. I hope I'm wrong, and they're making enough money with the DLC so that we see these great tables in the future!

It would just be a disappointment for them never to make it. Especially if it's because of people playing Pinball FX2 instead. :(

I didn't know about this kickstarter, I'm interested in this one. If it comes out for XBLA, it will probably be the best Star Trek game for the 360...

Pinball Arcade isn't as flashy as Pinball FX2 but the design behind the classic tables really shines. These old tables had incredible detail in their rules and goals. It will take you a while to get used to each table before you can finish any of the goal-based achievements. Physics and realism are important to Farsight, so the tables in Pinball Arcade have some of the best pinball physics around - more realistic than Pinball FX2.

If you played any of these real tables when you were younger, they feel pretty close to those original cabinets and will give you some nostalgia. The digital versions of the tables play as a brand-new table should, so the flippers are always strong, the lights always work, and none of the rubber is old and stiff.

If you enjoy pinball at all, pick it up. We only have three pinball titles on 360 so may as well support the genre. :)

As a fan of Pinball FX 1 and 2, I really didn't like this game at first. However, after playing it for a few days I can say I like it more than Pinball FX now. The physics are a lot more realistic and I can bump the table and the ball actually reacts, unlike Pinball FX. Both games are great, but nothing beats the real shit that used to be in the arcades. I even went out of my way to find a copy of Pinball Hall of Fame the Williams Collection because of this game. It is a definite must buy and even though the DLC has easy achievements, I still play the shit out of the DLC tables and try to complete all wizard goals even though I don't get shit for doing it. GOAL COMPLETE!

Sweet! now I'll be able to say I actually played one of the tables in Pinball Arcade in real life. I played "Elvira" a few times several years ago.

I know this is going to sound weird, but THE ELVIRA TABLE F*CKIN' ROCKS! I used to be into pinball pretty heavily and coming across the Elvira table at my local mega-arcade was sweet. There's so many things to do and activate. It may not have my favorite theme (that would be Terminator 2: Judgment Day and South Park) but it's the most fun gameplay wise. It's a must-play for old school pinball aficionados. I hope to see The Twilight Zone table in the future as well.

Here's why I won't play Pinball FX2: The Pinball Arcade has immortalized 100% real-world tables.
That is all.

I'll still buy it and play it even though I do not like Star Trek, but I want a kickstarter campaign for Terminator 2: Judgement Day - FOR REAL.

The Twilight Zone is confirmed to be coming to Pinball Arcade. Should be available by end of year, targeting November release I believe. The table was Kickstarted similar to The Next Generation table.
