Potential Changes to the Vote Ratio Badge

Potential Changes to the Vote Ratio Badge

Help us decide whether to change things

Written by TrueAchievement on 26 September 12 at 13:05

As you may or may not know, TA has lately been host to some hearty discussion regarding solution voting. The TA staff have been listening and we want to try and improve the situation for as many people as possible. The disparity between the various viewpoints in the discussion suggests that this may not be entirely simple so we’re going to test a few ideas out.

There are a couple of things we plan to do, on a trial basis, which will become permanent if they work well. The first is to display votes as the sum of the positive and negative votes rather than 2 separate figures. This is mainly to try and avoid the issue where one or two negative votes on an otherwise unblemished solution can feel like a big red mark.

The second item we wish to address is the vote ratio badge. Many of the contributors to the voting discussion seem confident that the vote ratio badge is the primary source of concern. For this reason, we are holding a vote to decide what course of action is best, and you will find the vote at the bottom of this post.

Note: These are some of the other suggestions which we are not going to act upon at the moment -

We will not be introducing forced commenting. Our concerns include the fact that people can just write nonsense to get past it, the unbalance it would incur to votes, unless we apply it to positive votes too, and how off putting it is to people’s overall experience. It would work in a perfect world but unfortunately that’s not the reality we live in.

We will not be removing negative votes altogether. We still place a lot of value in the ability to give critical feedback, which of course includes negative feedback. We feel it’s important that people still have the option to show that they disagree with a solution for whatever reason.

We may revisit these at some point if it turns out we need to put more substantial measures in place.
Poll: What do you think should happen to Vote Ratio badge on your homepage?
  • 31.9% - Leave the badge as it is
  • 12.3% - Replace the number with an icon but leave the 10 colours and the calculation that drives it
  • 38.0% - Only have 3 divisions and colours: Gold = 75%+ positive votes, Orange = 74 - 50% positive votes, and Red = less than 50% positive votes
  • 17.7% - Remove the badge altogether

  • We had 2,485 responses to the poll.

I like force commenting for negative votes, but not comments for positives.

The forced commenting sounds great. My only downvotes myself were from some morons that downvoted me because I downvoted them or they had no good reason at all. But if you see no reason negative votes and the positive that include text then it's easy to see if it's a trusted person for a session or not. Nevertheless it's easy to ruin a 100% feedback and sadly some trolls like to ruin it. As for the badge I think it's good the way it is.

Having had bad feedbacks for no reason I am going for the % that allows the pricks who negative vote for no reason don't effect as much. One good option is to show who gave thumbs up and thumbs down.

Personally I'd rather things stay as they are, I mean if this gets changed what next? People demanding the neg votes are removed/changed on reviews or no neg feedback on sessions?

How will the sum of votes be written on a solution? If a solution has 99 upvotes and 10 downvotes will it say "This solution has 89 positive votes" ?

I understand that some solution writers see the negatives as a big red mark, but however for solution users it's quite useful to see the negatives to see if the solution is worth trying.

I like the idea of forced commenting but I can also see negatives with it..
    1) People will just write ..... to get around the system therefore making it useless.
    2) Could create flame wars within the thread or even through PM system making this place a bit more unfriendly.

But for the poll I voted for -Only have 3 divisions and colours: Gold = 75%+ positive votes, Orange = 74 - 50% positive votes, and Red = less than 50% positive votes
I really like this one the best.

yeah exactly what I thought, hypothetically there might be a situation where an older solution has 30-15 votes whereas a newer, optimal solution may have 15-0. It would not be possible to differentiate the two under this proposed change, at least at face value.

In all honesty there is no real way to find out why your solution gets neg voted unless people comment. But you can't force people. You've just gotta try and figure it out for yourself why it is getting neg voted. It's no good seeing your solution getting neg votes and declare 'It's perfect'. Obviously it doesn't suit some people. So what? Can't please everyone. No big issue here, leave it as it is.

i have listed couple of solutions that gave clear easy instructions how to get an achievement and i got loads of negative with no reasons.
so i just removed the solutions and haven't made anymore.
let people put up solutions let them leave comments and thats it
