2K Sports Reduces Server Functionality Again

2K Sports are one of the developers that have been hit by Hurricane Sandy. Their support team is running a skeleton crew while things get back up and running again, but that didn't prevent the publisher from posting a rather ambiguous message regarding server functionality for their titles. According to the post, as of November 1st, these are the games that would be functional online:

Major League Baseball 2K12
NBA 2K13

The post suggests that these two games are the only 2K Sports titles to retain online functionality, but I can confirm that this is not true. Matchmaking servers also remain open for these games:

Unfortunately, this does mean that the servers for NBA 2K12 have been closed with no prior warning, leaving several unobtainable achievements. These servers are not affected by Hurricane Sandy and will not come back online. This is a list of the affected achievements:

NBA 2K12This One CountsThe This One Counts achievement in NBA 2K12 worth 31 pointsWin one online ranked match.

NBA 2K12Back to Back to BackThe Back to Back to Back achievement in NBA 2K12 worth 46 pointsWin 3 ranked matches in a row.

Any player who is missing one or more of the above will also not be able to get The Whole Shebang achievement. Those who have already obtained all of the online achievements will still be able to unlock this achievement without any bother.

FYI, matchmaking generally doesn't go down for 2K Sports games - just custom stuff like leagues, uploads, etc.

Can someone tell me why EA/2k shuts down the servers. I recently completed APF 2k8 on 10/22/12. Just in the nick of time I guess. I could of have earned a full 1000 GS for NBA 2k11, but I couldn't get the achievement "Another Day Another Win"

That's why I stay away from 2K and EA. And if I DO get a 2k or EA game I make sure I solely focus on all possible online achievements.

Another day another win was already unobtainable, as 2k stuffed up badly in last years playoffs - NBA Today games didn't work due to a glitch and left many unable to get achievement.

As for shutting down the online servers, they are the lowest of low. They can't get the servers working properly for 2K13 for goodness sake, and this takes the cake.

And we won't mention the myriad glitches achievements that mar an otherwise good game (2K13 that is).

But wow, that is just straight up crap news.

Reasons why people avoid sport games they generally come with broken, glitched or discontinued achievements within 4 months usually. Despite peoples complaints they leave them in that state until server shutdown a couple months later, I need little reason not to support them. Also online passes become useless so you lose a chunk of the game unless you want to shell out every year for a rehashed, usually poorly yearly sequel.
