THQ Delays Metro: Last Light and South Park

By Dog of Thunder, 4 years ago
Yesterday afternoon, THQ reported the results for the 2nd quarter of the 2013 fiscal year. The 2nd quarter ended on September 30th and so these results were highly anticipated from THQ as they included the impact of Darksiders II. You will recall from our previous coverage that the 2012 fiscal year was a horrible one for THQ, resulting in a net loss of $95.2 million. Back then, hopes were high that Darksiders II and Saint's Row: Enter the Dominatrix would carry THQ through 2013.

WIthout getting everyone bogged down in the details of the investor report, the pertinent information is that THQ's sales are down from this point last year, but after the stock buyback they launched in July, the company stock has only tumbled $1.23 a share. The financial outlook continues to look grim and with that in mind, THQ made the bold step of not forcing games out the door. Shockingly, THQ President Jason Rubin announced that both South Park: The Stick of Truth and Metro: Last Light would be delayed until the 2014 fiscal year.

The 2014 fiscal year begins on March 30th, likely pushing both titles back into the Summer or Fall of 2013. Rubin described these titles, and the PC RTS Company of Heroes 2, as the first titles being released by THQ that he is able to materially impact. This means all three titles are being given an extra coat of polish for the highest possible level of quality, with Rubin providing some extra detail that specifically, he wants the graphicial representation of Metro: Last Light's unique setting to be visually stunning.

Regardless of when the titles are released, THQ is facing mounting debt, listed as $21 million in the Q2 report and dwindling cash on hand, listed as $36.3 million for this quarter. It will be interesting to continue following THQ, whom has 10 titles slated for the next fiscal year, as they continue fighting for their very survival as a company.

When we have news as to the updated release dates for both South Park: The Stick of Truth and Metro: Last Light we will be sure to update you.
