This report is for the period November 19th to November 25th 2012
The festive season is upon us and wherever you turn there's a seasonal-focused advert trying to lure you into getting this gun belt for your wife or that electric razor for your gran. Not me though, I'm not so easily lured into the festive shopping malaise. This year, I'll be getting my Ewok helpers, the Statistcles, the best present ever, and it's not available in the shops: half a day off. Well, not exactly 'off'; I'll be sending them into town to do the rest of my seasonal shopping, so I don't have to. Everybody wins.
With that in mind, I've actually tried doing some of this week's numbers myself, without the help of the Statisticles, whilst they try and figure out what to get Leia that says 'I like you, but please stop calling me'.
After the last couple of weeks' Shooter madness, we settle back into some more normal numbers and Arcade still sucks for new stuff, but great sales almost make up for it...almost.Games Started
22,871 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 35,614 games between them (1,672 different games).
In the lead-up to the release of Hitman: Absolution
, a wave of discontent spread through the internet that maybe the latest chapter in the story of the bald assassin would not stay true to the franchise's sneaky roots and would be a lesser game for it. However, the reviews (ours included
) have suggested that the game is an over-all success and the numbers this week back that up with the game landing in the top spot with over 3,000 starters. These are quite a bit lower than the big releases of the last few weeks though, suggesting that the game doesn't quite reach blockbuster status.Call of Duty: Black Ops II
and Halo 4
both settle into normality after their huge debut weeks. CoD: BlOps 2
maintains the lead over its rival. However, this is its second week on the tables, whereas it's Halo 4
's third. Last week, Halo
achieved closer to 4,000 starters, compared to CoD
's almost 3,000 this week. This suggests that Halo
has the overall edge in terms of numbers. However, the drop off from week one to week two was more significant for Halo
than it was for CoD
so maybe CoD
will prove to have longer term popularity.
Last week I noted that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
wasn't that high up the chart, at ninth, in its debut week because at that time it had been released in Europe, but not the US. Well, now the US release has passed, it gets a little bump in numbers, but only just enough to keep it in ninth with exactly 400 starters.
It was revealed to me that last week LEGO The Lord of the Rings
was in a similar (but flipped) situation with its US release reflected on that table and its European release reflected on this week's one. In this case, the numbers are boosted by almost 200 starters. However, it isn't enough to challenge the big guns on the table and gives it a number five spot.Top Retail Games Started
Oh, Arcade. I give up. As predicted, after weeks of a lacklustre release schedule and pretty substandard numbers, the table this week is easily dominated by the numerous sales on offer.
With a beefy Black Friday
sale and a hearty 10th Anniversary
sale, eight out of the ten titles on the table are involved in one sale or another. As a fairly big name title and recent release, Rock Band Blitz
proves the most popular, with the freebie Wreckateer
slipping into third, behind the perennially popular free-to play title Happy Wars (Xbox 360)
. If we could see further down the table, we'd probably see sale titles peppering the majority of the top 30 or so titles.
Interestingly, the sole Deal of the Week
title, I Am Alive
, doesn't make an appearance. Maybe it just got lost amidst all the other sale goodness or maybe it's because it was a 1/3rd off, rather than the usual half price, and people are waiting for it to drop lower before taking the plunge.
With all those sale titles it would be easy to miss that, despite keeping a low profile in tenth place, The Walking Dead (Xbox 360)
receives a boost on its numbers, almost doubling its starters from the week before. This will be because the final episode was released on the final day of this chart, so those who were waiting to start the game until they could play it all the way through, will be starting to pick up all the episodes. That, or they'll be waiting for the retail disc version that releases soon (me included! *cough* Christmas prezzie *cough*).Top Arcade Games Started
New release Turn N Run (WP)
lands in first on Windows Phone Games Started. *tenuous link alert* Speaking of turning and running, someone who's particularly good at that, and jumping too, is Faith from Mirror's Edge (WP)
. And why would this title, released in July, be so popular this week, launching it into second place? It wasn't on sale or anything...well, not officially. We discovered that, for a short time, the Nokia exclusive was accidentally free
. Despite being quickly restored to its standard price $2.99, it seems that at least 270 TAers managed to scoop it up at its rock bottom price and start it up.
Thanks to the aforementioned Black Friday sale also including Windows Phone titles, Mush (WP)
, Carcassonne (WP)
, Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles HD (WP)
and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I (WP)
make appearances on the table. Top Windows Phone Games StartedGames Completed
7,480 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,577 games between them (1,081 different games).
As predicted, the "Mr Torgue" DLC shoots Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360)
back to the top of Retail Games Completed with a significant lead, just like the "Captain Scarlett" DLC did back in October.Assassin's Creed III
continues pulling in decent completion numbers, staying steadily over the 200 mark and grabbing itself a number two spot on the table. Reflecting this, the percentage of players having now finished the games has also risen from 2% to...3%.
In its debut week, Hitman Absolution
snipes the number five spot with just over 60 completions. Right now, 4% of players have finished the title, which is actually quite high for such a new retail title. Could this one prove ultimately to be an easier completion than Hitman: Blood Money
? Only time - and a lot of dead bodies - will tell.
It looks like, in the grand tradition of all the other LEGO
games, LEGO: LOTR is probably quite an easy completion, securing the number seven spot. I'd expect to see this one on the table for a week or two if it is to prove as easy as the others to finish.Top Retail Games Completed
Like Arcade Games Started, Arcade Games Completed is almost filled up with sale titles, with one notable exception. After its mysterious absence last week (I'm told it's because the achievements were tracked by the site a while before the episode released), The Walking Dead
returns with a vengeance, shooting to the top of Arcade Games Completed with other 2,500 completions. Bear in mind, this will also include people who picked up a selection of the final episodes and even all of them (those on Arcade Games Started this week), and decided to blast through the whole thing in one go. As more people jump on board and the retail version releases, expect to see this at the top for a good long while.
Many of the SEGA Vintage Collection
titles are notoriously easy completions, and the presence of some of the ones from this week's sale on the table proves this, with SEGA Vintage Collection: Streets of Rage
, SEGA Vintage Collection: Golden Axe
and SEGA Vintage Collection: Alex Kidd & Co.
in third, sixth and ninth places.
Other easy sale titles from this week include, Daytona USA
, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013
.Top Arcade Games Completed
A new Windows Phone game and it's easy to complete? Put the flag out! [/sarc] Turn N Run
currently sits at an almost 50% completion rate, so it's no surprise that it finds itself at third this week. It still has to settle behind UNO (WP)
and Cut The Rope (WP)
though, with their continuously high completion rates.
Despite its renewed popularity this week due to freeness, Mirror's Edge
doesn't bring in enough completions to put it on this table. This may be because it bucks the trend of most other Windows Phone games and actually provides somewhat of a challenge, with a current 10% of players having completed it.Top Windows Phone Games CompletedAchievements Won
58,285 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 730,195 achievements online between them (43,643 different achievements).
So it looks like, whilst Hitman
scores a higher number of starters and Halo
is also probably proving quite popular at the moment, most of you are actually picking up achievements in CoD: BlOps 2
as it takes a clean sweep on today's...
Hold on a moment. Hey you, yes you, achievement number eight. There's something not quite right about you. Here I am looking at all these Black Ops achievements making a nice clean sweep on the table and I can't shake the feeling that you're...different somehow. Maybe it's because you're bald and you've got a barcode tattooed on your head. And what are you planning on doing with that fiber wire?Top Retail Achievements Won
Is this really a surprise? A clean sweep for The Walking Dead
. This is actually the first time the game has managed this, despite its ongoing popularity. This is due to the fact that each episode contains eight achievements, which isn't normally enough for it to take all the spots. However, with achievements for Episode Four taking the bottom two spots, it proves that , as I mentioned earlier, there are a significant number of players who were biding their time to complete the game in larger batches, rather than following the monthly release schedule.Top Arcade Achievements Won
Being a popular and easy title helps Turn N Run
secure most of the spots on Windows Phone Achievements Won this week, with a couple of stray entries: Bag Lady
from Mirror's Edge
in eighth place and Rope Cutter Maniac
from Cut the Rope
in tenth. The Mirror's Edge
achievement is the single easiest one in the game, but the Cut the Rope
one is for cutting 800 ropes, so represents more dedication to the game, showing that the achievements won for that game are now more focused on the long term, casual players, rather than those who powered through it early on.Top Windows Phone Achievements Won
With the Halo
numbers now beginning to slip, Shooter drops by over 5 million in Genre this week, bringing it back closer to Action-Adventure, which grows by 1 million, thanks to the likes of Hitman
. However, Shooter still has 3 million more TrueAchievements won than its rival and so safely retains the number one spot for now.
"Mr Torgue" no doubt gives Role-Playing a small boost, pushing it over Racing and into third for the time being.Total TrueAchievements won by Genre
I should go now, the Statisticles have returned with their shopping haul and I need to go and sternly tell them that 'No, leaf bundles and dried faeces sculptures of C3PO are not
suitable gifts'. Unless they're for the mother-in-law.
