Pier Solar HD Confirmed for Release on the 360

Alrighty people. Raise your hand (or comment below) if you count yourself as a lover of the old-school, 16-bit RPGs of yesteryear. Do you defend Final Fantasy 6 over Final Fantasy VII at every turn? Long for the days when Breath of Fire was relevant? Maybe you were more a fan of Phantasy Star? Whatever your flavor, that era has, sadly, come and gone, and while we've seen nods to it through the works of developers like Zeboyd (whom you may know from Breath of Death VII, Cthulu Saves the World, or Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3, all of which are available through the XBLIG Marketplace), a major release of a game of that style really hasn't come to pass in a long time.

Some developers want to make these releases a reality, and have taken to Kickstarter to fulfill that goal. We've seen it before with the success of the Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams campaign, which lead to the announcement of the game's future XBLA release. Today, yet another title has been added to this rank, and if you grew up on the Square and Enix titles of the 90s (You know, before they were a single company), then this will definitely interest you.

You may not have heard about Pier Solar before, but that's where we step in. The game is the only new release - so not a remix or mash-up or whatever else - to grace the SEGA Genesis and SEGA Mega Drive this millennium. The game tells the story of Hoston, who is on a quest to save his father from a mysterious illness. Of course, no good RPG would let the hero go off on his own, so Hoston is joined by his two best friends, Alina and Edessot, on a quest to find a rare herb to cure the illness of Hoston's father. Of course, this is merely the beginning, as eventually Hoston and his friends "unravel his father's past and the mystery of Pier Solar and the Great Architects."

WaterMelon Co., the team behind the game, describes it as a "love letter to the rich, imaginative 16-bit RPGs of a bygone era." To further hammer home that point, here are some details and screens for the game, which show its new, HD look.

The Biggest 16-bit RPG Ever! We released Pier Solar on a custom 64MEG cartridge (the average SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis game size is 12MEG), making it the biggest 16-bit RPG ever! This allowed us to push the 16-bit medium to a precedent setting level, with state-of-the-art aesthetics and things like full-screen cutscenes, background scaling and 3D modes.

A 100% Original RPG! Pier Solar was developed from the ground up. An original world, storyline, soundtrack, characters, enemies, and battle style. No ports, translations or copying from any other game - it's all fresh! The first original 16-bit RPG to do this in over a decade!

A Massive World to Explore! Pier Solar has 50+ hours of gameplay, over 300 locations, nearly 500 unique treasure chests, and over 800 NPCs!

Epic Battle Tactics! We developed an innovative battle system that puts you in control of up to five characters and includes in-depth strategic moves such as counter-attacks and a special strategy called Gather, which stores energy to unleash even more powerful moves and spells!

Translated in 5 Languages! Pier Solar is translated in 5 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German.

An Original Soundtrack! A beautiful soundtrack written just for Pier Solar that embodies everything great about a classic retro soundtrack!

There Are Surprises! We also packed-in many other surprises and secrets like hidden areas and mini-games!

In addition to all that information, they also released the following video of Pier Solar running on the systems that the Kickstarter was initially targeting.

At this time, there's no confirmed release date (though the target release is December 2013), nor have they confirmed if the game is intended for Retail or Arcade release. We'll be sure to keep you informed as we know more.
