Ghostbusters: The Video Game Servers NOT Closing

By Rebecca Smith, 4 years ago
Do you know those mistakes that you hope nobody will notice, those little slip-ups that you hope that you can cover up before any real damage is done? I'm willing to bet that Atari is really wishing that they'd made one of those goofs instead of one that was picked up by many angry gamers. What am I talking about? Well, it turns out that the Xbox 360 servers for Ghostbusters: The Video Game aren't shutting down anytime soon.

On December 7th, Atari made a statement on their official Facebook page stating that the servers for Ghostbusters: The Video Game would be closing for all platforms, a statement that can still be seen in its entirety. After bringing you the news, many of you were understandably upset that no warning had been given and that you would have unobtainable achievements. Despite this, reports started to surface that the servers were still in action; in fact, many players proceeded to rush online and grab the multiplayer achievements before the opportunity had passed.

It seems that, in reality, those actions were a little premature. After five days of rage and confusion posted in the Facebook comments, Atari released a brief statement two hours ago -- I'll let them explain:

We apologize for any confusion. Currently there are no plans to shut down the Xbox 360 servers.
A visit to the game's official page on Atari's website provides an amended statement that clarifies the position of the game's servers:

Ghostbusters Recruits – we regret to notify you that we have shut down the Containment Unit behind the Ghostbusters Video Game servers for the PC and PS3 platforms. Since the game launched in October 2009 we’ve had some great times busting ghosts online, but after three years we're seeing that multiplayer participation has dropped. Please note, this shutdown won’t have any effect on the single player portion of the game, or XBLA multiplayer. For more great Ghostbusting action online – check out Ghostbusters Sanctum of Slime on PSN, XBLA and PC (!
The Xbox 360 servers live on to contain ghosts for another day.
