TA Gaming Stats - December 12th to 16th 2012

By Chewie, 4 years ago
This report is for the period December 12th to December 16th 2012.

Hello everyone and happy whatever it is that you're supposed to be happy about right now. For me, it's Life Day, which means plenty of Wookiee-ookiee and maybe a glass or two of Hoth Chocolate.

I'm going to keep the Stats quite brief this week. For one, because of a lack of new releases, the charts are very similar overall to last week. For another, my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, are expecting a visit from Father Chewsmas this evening so I've got to get myself ready. I hope they've left me out some treats, otherwise it's lumps of Chromite for the lot of them.

Games Started
19,218 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 28,730 games between them (1,686 different games).

Thanks to a complete lack of new releases, this week's Retail Games Started is a carbon copy of last week's with the same titles in the same positions.

Far Cry 3 continues to prove a hit, probably thanks to a glut of glowing reviews and positive word of mouth, and maintains a strong lead at the top. However, it still drops its starters by half, from 3,000 to 1,500.

The rest of the numbers are almost the same as last week, with only small rises and falls. Although it's a very small change, it's probably worth noting that Call of Duty: Black Ops II drops its numbers (by 50), whereas Halo 4 actually grows its numbers a little (also by 50), reducing the gap between the two biggest sellers of the season yet again, even if CoD: BlOps 2 still maintains the edge.

When the Karaoke app was first announced, it caused mass excitement and delirium from some corners of the TA Newshound Treehouse, not least from osubluejacket, who's been chanelling Freddie Mercury ever since - spandex, moustache and all. It would seem that a good number of you have been similarly drawn to the newly launched title and have been stretching your vocal chords, cracking glass and terrifying cats with your attempts to sing along to the 8,000 songs available: that, or you just decided to get some free and easy achievements on the daily free songs. Regardless, almost 1,000 players started the game. I did as well, but I didn't even make it through the first song before the sound of my own voice caused my ears to start bleeding, so I didn't get any achievements for it.

Last week's top starter, Happy Wars (Xbox 360) drops to third as the retail release of The Walking Dead (Xbox 360) pushes it up into second, tripling its number of starters from 150 to 450.

New releases include Suda 51's Black Knight Sword and Mensa's Mensa Academy at sixth and tenth, but with quite low amounts starters that would see them lower down the table on an ordinary week.

Top Arcade Games Started

Windows Phone Games Started is also very similar to last week's, with the free game, AlphaJax (WP) maintaining its solid lead, but still dropping by over 1,000 starters to just under 500.

The usual suspects make up the rest of the table with numbers so close that it doesn't make much difference what order they fall in.

Top Windows Phone Games Started

Games Completed
7,434 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,466 games between them (1,177 different games).

Now that the 'Flood' gates have opened (see what I did there?) with the release of the last achievement-containing episode of Spartan Ops, the completions for Halo 4 keep on 'Flooding' in (again Chewie?!), with over 1,000 this week, although that is half of last week's numbers, when it really 'Flooded' (it's not funny...) the table. This week, the numbers are also bolstered by the release of the "Crimson Map Pack".

Far Cry 3 jumps up the table, almost doubling the amount of completions being picked up. With the game proving so popular and apparently relatively easy to finish, I'd expect to see this hovering around the table for a while, much like the similarly 'open world but pretty easy to complete' Sleeping Dogs did for the last few months.

Top Retail Games Completed

The Walking Dead maintains high completion numbers of around 450 and a top place on Arcade Games Completed. The three SEGA Vintage fighting titles also continue to pull in high enough numbers to keep them in second, third and fourth places. Elsewhere, the numbers are so low, it's really a case of 'nothing to see here'. But if you insist on seeing, you'll find the easy completions of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, a couple of the recently on sale SEGA Vintage titles, Happy Wars (Xbox 360) and Harms Way, amongst others.

Top Arcade Games Completed

The same three games lead the pack on Windows Games Completed that have for the last few weeks, Turn N Run (WP), Cut The Rope (WP) and Spider Jack (WP). AlphaJax makes its debut appearance in fourth with around 30 completions. However, the game sits at a pretty low overall completion percentage of 3% at the moment, so don't expect it to rise much in the tables.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (WP) seems to make an inexplicable entrance at seven. But it's probably just because it's such an easy completion and the numbers on the rest of the this table or so low, close and interchangeable.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

Achievements Won
58,536 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 651,460 achievements online between them (45,625 different achievements).

The "Crimson Map Pack" for Halo 4 proves very popular this week, not least because it was seemingly free for about a week. It accounts for eight of the achievements on this week's Retail Achievements Won, with a single one from the main game, Dedicated to Crimson at eighth, and a solitary achievement for CoD BlOps 2, Welcome to the Penthouse, disrupting the clean sweep in tenth.

Top Retail Achievements Won

The three easiest achievements for Karaoke settle in the top spots in Arcade Achievements Won, followed by ones for The Walking Dead. Interestingly, the most popular of these are for the very first achievements of the first episode, indicating that the majority of players for the game now have cycled back to new starters, what with the retail disc release.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

AlphaJax grabs a clean sweep again thanks to its continuing popularity and continuing freeness...

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Shooter drops again in Genre, reducing its lead over Action-Adventure, but still holding a solid top spot position. The rest of the table sees literally almost no movement. Seriously, the numbers are only ever so slightly different. The only real shift is Music & Rhythm jumping up to seventh, thanks to Karaoke
