Halo: Reach New MP Rules

Halo: Reach New MP Rules

Halo multiplayer but not as we know it!

Written by The Splintercat on 29 March 10 at 15:37

In Bungie's weekly newsletter they have announced an overhaul of the multiplayer system. Bungie.net describes rank in Halo: Reach as "a global, cross-gameplay-mode-encompassing representation of the time you've spent in the game." It says "rank as you knew it in Halo 3, is dead." It goes onto explain that the player's rank will increase over time as they earn credits. So overall your rank will indicate how much time you have spent playing Halo: Reach.

Bungie say credits can be achieved by:
* Finishing games and Winning Games in Matchmaking
* Commendations - Commendations are persistent, aggregating awards that will advance through gameplay
*Challenges and achievements

Challenges will be issued daily and weekly to give players an incentive to keep coming back. They may include things like "Kill X players in Matchmaking" or "Maybe we'll ask you to play a Mission like few have dared..."

As your rank and credits increase, you can spend your credits on new armour to allow more customisation then ever before. It says though that "The stuff you earn with Credits is purely cosmetic", meaning the flashy new helmet you just bought, will be no better then any of the other helmets, it might just look cooler!

Bungie says the reason it has changed its multiplayer ranking system is because the "vast majority" of Halo 3 players never climbed to the upper ranks.

Take a look at Bungie's newsletter, where they answer many of the questions you will probably have: http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&lin...

Halo: Reach will be released this autumn on Xbox 360.

"Purely cosmetic" is not a phrase that sets my heart racing to earn credits. :/

It's only late if you already knew about it. It's been what, three days?

It sounds very similar to Rainbow Six Vegas 2's rank advancement, which I think will be a good thing for Halo.

Sounds great if they implement right.

I'm always stunned that more games don't include customization for the characters the same way that Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 did. I loved running around in crazy colored armor.

Although I'm not sure if I'll want to play this game, my roommate will suck me into it. I like how they are incorporating some of the things that makes call of duty so good.

Now if they'd just incorporate the replays, I'd have even less to complain about...

Trueskill may be a little bit broken but I still prefer it, I'm pretty sick of the level system that so many games are adopting. Call of duty worked a little because of the perks and guns. I prefer trueskill trying to get to my highest level rather then playing against a mixture of better and worse players. That's what social is for.
Take gears of war 2, the system was broken and was replaced, your level depends on how long you play it, not how good you are. Suppose this is mixing it up a little, but I doubt generals and recruits will be seperated. Might just be me though.

EDIT: Glad they are keeping trueskill, was worried they threw it out.
Still not keen on the ranking up system though.

Glad that armor variants are not (seemingly) tied to the achievements anymore.

Hopefully, they learned from H3 and ditched Ranked FFA-type achievements. Those things were a ginormous pain in the ass, especially Steppin' Razor and Overkill, given that they were only (usually) available in Lone Wolves and you needed 3 & 4 kills respectively when there's only a total of 6 people in the match to begin with.
