Dead Space 3 Will Include Micro-transactions

In today's current climate of gaming 'journalism', it does not take much for a false rumor to bring in page clicks and enrage an audience of hardcore gamers. That is an easy feat actually, which is why when Eurogamer broke news of EA's Dead Space 3 including micro-transactions, well, I hoped it was simply a hoax.

Alas, Dead Space 3 Associate Producer Yara Khoury went on the record as stating "You can buy resources with real money, but scavenger bots can also give you the currency that you can use on the marketplace. So you don't have to spend real world dollars."

While Visceral Games has insisted that you can not simply buy the best guns from the start of the game, the response was that those guns require resources only available when playing in a New Game+. The fact remains that N7 armor is not the only thing coming to Dead Space 3 from last year's hit Mass Effect 3, which had micro-transactions but limited them to the multiplayer mode. Visceral Games, and their publisher, EA Games, are bringing micro-transactions to Dead Space 3's single player and co-op modes.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? At the moment, Visceral Games claims that these purchases are not required to get everything out of Dead Space 3. Different packs with different amounts of currency will be available to purchase, which is considerate, but could we be approaching Clash of Clans territory here? Is this a slippery slope or a bold new era for gaming?

We can judge for ourselves when Dead Space 3 is available February 5th in North America and February 8th in Europe.
