This report is for the period January 21st to January 27th 2013
I'm going to be completely honest and say that this week my mind has been completely occupied by the epic Yearly Stats for 2012 article that you should find above or below this one, so this article for the third week of January may be a little briefer than normal. Although, it's not too bad because with barely anything in the way of new releases, the numbers aren't exactly exhilarating.
This week I've also been working my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, to the bone (literally) trying to get the yearly Stats in order, so they weren't in fit shape to help me out here. Looks like I'm flying solo on this one.Games Started
17,807 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 26,773 games between them (1,757 different games).
All of the games in Retail Games Started this week fall well below the 1,000 mark, meaning that even the titles that do appear at the top don't really pull in great numbers.
Last week's new release and top spot holder, DmC: Devil May Cry
, slips into second place with around 600 starters, over a third less than it achieved last week. This puts Far Cry 3
back in the top spot where it had been for many weeks previously. It makes a lot smaller drop, losing 100 starters to settle at around the 700 mark.
After regaining the edge over its Spartan rival last week, Call of Duty: Black Ops II
outstrips Halo 4
again in third and fourth places. However, when you look at how much Halo
dominates in the yearly round-up, this edge isn't really enough to make a difference to CoD
's overall success.
The rest of the table sees the same big releases from the end of last year, but with increasingly lower numbers. Anarchy Reigns
slips off the bottom of the table, allowing Forza Horizon
to make a reappearance, albeit with a lowly 185 starters.Top Retail Games Started
A new release makes it to the top of the Arcade for the first time in a few weeks, in the form of Double Fine's puzzle-platformer The Cave
. The over 650 starters it pulls in gives it a comfortable lead, especially as the other titles see a noticeable drop in numbers. The Walking Dead (Xbox 360)
retains a number two spot, despite dropping from last week's spooky 666 starters to 400 this week. Happy Wars (Xbox 360)
sees an even bigger drop though after last week's massive boost in numbers. It loses almost 700 starters, to settle into third place with just over 300.
The deal titles from the recent 2K Publisher sale drop from the table after two weeks on the chart. They are replaced by some of the more popular titles from the previous Countdown to 2013 sales, Mark of the Ninja
and Dust: An Elysian Tail
. I can only presume that people who purchased them in the sale are still getting round to starting them off. I know I've got Mark of the Ninja
still unstarted, amongst others.
It was previously quite a rare thing to find games from the Sales & Specials+ app on the charts, but they've recently become a bit more frequent, especially when it comes to retro titles. This week sees Space Invaders Extreme
make an appearance in tenth with almost 60 starters after featuring in the app's Scratch & Match
game.Top Arcade Games Started
At first I scratched my head when I saw this week's Windows Games Started table. Shuffle Party (WP)
isn't a new game by any stretch and, whilst consistently popular by virtue of being free, I wouldn't have expected it to jump to the top of the table like this. Then I realised that the game was recently launched on Windows Phone 8
, so all of a sudden a whole bunch more gamers picked it up. It's 160 starters land it on the top spot, above the consistently popular (and also free), AlphaJax (WP)
, which has retained a steady over 100 starters for the last few weeks.
Last week's new releases, Flight Control Rocket (WP)
and Blobster (WP)
slip away off the table, giving way to the same old selection of free, cheap and/or easy titles.Top Windows Phone Games StartedGames Completed
7,720 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,871 games between them (1,243 different games).
As predicted, the "Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt" DLC for Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360)
continues to haul in the completions for the game, keeping it easily on the top spot, although it drops by half of last weeks over 1,000 completions.Far Cry 3
drops by around 100 completions this week, but it's over 350 keep it easily in the number two spot, well ahead of the other games on the table, which are mostly made up of the same games from the past few weeks.DmC: Devil May Cry
makes its first appearance on the table at seventh, only a week after release, with 100 completions. This may surprise some who remember the Devil May Cry
franchise to be rock hard, but quite a lot has been made on how this iteration of the series is notably easier than previous instalments. As it is, at nearly 5%, this game has already achieved a higher completion percentage than the other games on Xbox, http://www.trueachievements.com/DMC-HD-Collection/achie....htm
(3.5%) and Devil May Cry 4
(2%). Make of that what you will: more accessible for the casual player or dumbing down to reach a wider audience and ignore the hardcore core fanbase?Top Retail Games Completed
Losing only 200 of last week's 850 completions, The Walking Dead
continues to pull in really high completion numbers on Arcade Games Completed, even though most players appear to have reached the final episode.
After three weeks in second place, Doritos Crash Course
begins to tumble down the table, settling into fourth place after dropping 100 completions.
The rest of the table? Same old same old.Top Arcade Games CompletedPac-Man Championship Edition DX (WP)
bows out of Windows Phone Games Completed this week now that every Wookiee and his Ewok has wrapped it up, meaning that the table is again filled with all the easy, cheap or free games on the marketplace, many of which also litter Games Started. Shuffle Party (WP)
in particular makes a reappearance following the boost in popularity after being released to Windows Phone 8.
After making its first appearance last week, AlphaJax
continues to squeeze out a handful of completions now that people have been playing it for long enough to get those last few, time-consuming, achievements. It stays steady in ninth place with a little over 20 completions.Top Windows Phone Games CompletedAchievements Won
49,218 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 614,224 achievements online between them (47,992 different achievements).
Dante is nowhere to be found this week on Retail Achievements Won, so he's been replaced by all the achievements still being picked up in Far Cry 3
. These are all the final achievements for wrapping up the story, which shows that most players are now well into the final stages of the game.
The top positions are still dominated by the "Hammerlock" achievements in Borderlands 2
However, the real surprise is Welcome to the Penthouse
for CoD: BlOps 2
in second place. Can anyone kindly explain why such a high number of TA'ers all got it at once? Was there some mass boosting session going on?Top Retail Achievements Won
After being disrupted by Happy Wars
last week, The Walking Dead
steals back its clean slate status, with all these achievements being from the final episode or the very end of the previous one.Top Arcade Achievements WonShuffle Party's
boost in starters means that it shuffles its way to the top six spots in Windows Phone Achievements Won. However, it loses out on clean slate status, thanks to the ever popular AlphaJax

This week see Action-Adventure finally taking the edge on Shooter in Genre. Although both genres have dropped in numbers, Shooter dropped considerably more (420,000) than its rival (180,000). All other genres also take a dip in numbers, apart from Puzzle, which manages to grow by over 36,000 and jump from tenth to eighth. My gut would've originally said that was no doubt thanks to The Cave
, but that game is actually classed as an Action-Adventure title on TA, so it's more likely thanks to the rise in Wordament
players across different platforms. This figure will no doubt jump again next week when we see the numbers for the new web version
of the game reflected in the genre table.Total TrueAchievements won by Genre
That's all for this week's Stats. Be sure to check out the 2012 year round-up article too if you haven't already. Next week will hopefully have a few more interesting numbers for us with a couple more new releases. However, it's probably going to be a few more weeks more before things start to really hot up as the blockbuster Spring releases start pumping out.
