Activision Unveils Skylanders SWAP Force

Recently, Disney unveiled Disney Infinity, a new game that utilizes the "real toys in a gaming world" approach. After all, for the past couple of years, Activision's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders Giants have been the only entries in that market, and they've both met with huge success.

Not to be outdone, Activision has today revealed Skylanders SWAP Force, an all-new entry in the franchise that will allow gamers to use toys with interchangeable parts.

How will this new concept work? The toys will now have distinct top and bottom halves, which can be combined to form new Skylanders. For example, take the following two characters, Wash Buckler and Magna Charge.

Now Portal Masters can go beyond those two characters and swap the top and bottom halves to create new ones. By combining the top half of Magna Charge, along with his energy blast attack, with the bottom half of Wash Buckler, you've now created Magna Buckler.

Curious as to what's setting the stage for Skylander's SWAP Force? There is, apparently, a mystical volcano that exists in the Cloudbreak Islands. Every 100 years, this volcano erupts, this replenishing the magic in the Skylands. At one time, there was an epic battle that took place as this volcano erupted. Unfortunately, the eruption caused the participating Skylanders to be split apart. Fortunately, the volcano's magic "gave these heroes a remarkable new power -- the ability to swap halves -- turning them into a special team known as the SWAP Force." Kaos has returned with an evil plan, and it's up to Portal Masters and the SWAP Force to save Skyland and the Cloudbreak Islands.

Skylanders SWAP Force will see "6 new SWAP Force characters, along with 32 core Skylanders characters (16 completely new Skylanders and 16 new versions of fan favorite characters from previous games) and eight new LightCore characters" available for the game. The SWAP Force characters will allow for up to 250 unique combinations, giving Portal Masters plenty of options in their fight against Kaos.

There is no official release date at this time, though there likely will be more details available after the game and toys debut at the upcoming Toy Fair 2013, which will be held February 10-13.
