Microsoft Discontinues Family Gold Membership Pack

By Keith Gray, 3 years ago
A representative for Microsoft has exclusively confirmed to Joystiq today that the Family Gold Membership Pack for Xbox LIVE is no longer available to purchase. The special membership bundle had been created in November 2010 to allow families to buy four annual Xbox LIVE Gold subscriptions in a single transaction, for a reduced overall cost of $99.99.

Microsoft's spokesperson gave the following explanation on the company's latest business decision:
The Family Gold offer is no longer available for purchase... The Family Center experience with settings management, allowance granting, child activity reports and family subscriptions management are still available for current Family Gold members at this time... We continually evaluate our business focus and work to offer services that make the most sense for our customers and XboxAs yet, Microsoft has not given any details about what the future holds for the "settings management, allowance granting, child activity reports and family subscriptions management" options that were linked to this method of subscription and the Family Center. However, the wording of Microsoft's statement suggests that those safety features will also gradually cease to exist.

probably wasn't lucrative enough. I wouldnt be surprised if they change their entire subscription based system to work in line with the new console being launched. Either way, I don't pay more than 35.00 per year for xbl via online sales and stuff. That is about all it's worth to me.

It was a decent idea, but too many restrictions on use.

Hopefully this is the first step to making Xbox LIVE free and abolishing the Gold.

The family plan wasn't very good for an actual family anyway. You had one account that could do everything...My house there is myself, my wife, and two kids...My wife would have to be treated like a child, and could not purchase anything with a credit card, as the account thinks there is one adult, and 3 children.

The $1 a month gold is still the best deal anyway.
Yes, I know I am.

They discontinued the Family Gold exclusive sales over a year ago.
Sucks for me. Guess i'll be bargain shopping for my next years subscription and running my extra accounts with freebie cards.

Great, so I go from $100 annually for Live to $240 annually. Guess there will be no more 4 box boosting for me. Microsoft and EA continue to destroy this hobby daily, and my interest level declines exponentially

Well when you consider other rival platforms offer the same services for free, it's like we're paying for the sake of paying. PS4 is going to have cross game chat aka chat parties for free. Reason PS3 couldn't was because it lacked sufficient RAM.

Makes sense. Why have a gold account for 4 people in one household for one console, when you only get one online pass in a game.

And you know that'll happen because the people that aren't serious about it enough to pay will come around now.

Imagine how much more challenging it will be to boost games if xbox live was free!!

Damn shame, I was going to purchase this on March 20th when my existing membership expired. MS needs to get there stuff together. 99.99 was cheaper than 180 for 3 memberships. Only thing holding me back was you had to have a credit card on file.
