TA Gaming Stats - March 2013

By Chewie, 3 years ago
This report is for the period March 1st to March 31st 2013.

Welcome to the Stats for the month of March here on TA. We experienced a healthy dose of March Madness in the Stats office last month, with a good proportion of my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, being taken up with the mating season and their crazy courtship rituals (fur, jelly, crossbows, glitter and beads everywhere). It's a shame really that all the Statisticles are male. Poor Jenson; his delicate features did not serve him well this month. No matter, I managed to get most of them to focus much of their pent up hormonal tension into producing some great Stats for us. This month also saw the biggest, most exciting, releases of the Spring, so read on to see which titles came out on top.

Games Started
92,141 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 240,891 games between them (2,128 different games).

It's the battle of the big three on Retail Games Started, as Gears of War: Judgment, Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360) fighting for the top spot. In the end, the Gears lads take the crown over Lara and Booker, securing almost 23,000 starters over less than 10 days. The earliest release of three, Tomb Raider, follows in second with nearly 20,000, and Bioshock Infinite pulls into third with almost 17,000. That's no mean feat, considering those numbers are pulled in over the course of just five days.

Other new releases for the month get considerably lower numbers, with The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct in fourth with 3,300, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 in sixth with 2,700, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 in thirteenth with a little over 1,800 and Army of TWO: The Devil's Cartel in sixteenth with over 1,700.

A small selection of last month's new releases continue to pull in enough numbers to give them mid-table positions, with Crysis 3, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Dead Space 3 in seventh, eighth and tenth places. The rest of the table is made up of the most popular titles of the end of year, many of which see boosts in numbers thanks to the Games on Demand titles in the Spring Sale. However, the most popular of last year's titles remains Far Cry 3 in fifth with 3,000 starters.

Top Retail Games Started

Although new releases dominate most of the Retail chart, Arcade Games Started is distinctly more 'old hat', with much of the top of the table being made up of slightly older, popular titles, such as The Walking Dead (Xbox 360), SEGA Vintage Fighters (Sonic the Fighters, Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers) and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. These games receive big boosts in numbers thanks to some sales during the month and pull in between 1,700 and 3,400 starters. Consistently popular titles such as Happy Wars (Xbox 360) and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition also pop up around the top.

The most popular new release of the month, Terraria (Xbox 360), which came in fifth with 1,900 starters, can't even really be considered that new anyway, considering its been available on PC for two years. In fact, neither can other new release, Darkstalkers Resurrection, which came in tenth with 700 starters, being an HD port of two Dalkstalkers titles from the nineties. In fact the only 'new' new release of the month is WRC Powerslide in eighteenth with 320 starters. Last month's new releases pepper the chart, with Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds, Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien and CAPCOM Arcade Cabinet making it to eighth, thirteenth and nineteenth.

Elsewhere, The Maw and Toy Soldiers appear in twelfth and fourteenth with between 430 and 490 starters, thanks to an exploit on a snack packet offer that people took liberal advantage of. Finally, the forever discounted Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light appears at the bottom with 290 starters after featuring in the Square Enix sale. It could even appear next month after being discounted yet again in an April Deal of the Week.

Top Arcade Games Started

Only three new releases make it onto the table for Windows Games Started amidst the usual suspects and a few sale titles. First up for new releases is Shark Dash (WP) in first place by a long way with 550 starters, almost 200 more than the next game on the chart. Cross-platform strategy title, Galactic Reign (WP) takes seventh with 270 starters. Real Soccer 2013 (EU) (WP) takes eleventh with 220 starters, with its American brother, Real Soccer 2013 (WP), not quite making it. Thanks to a popular EA Sale, four titles make the table, with Mirror's Edge (WP) the most popular in ninth with 230 starters, whilst the easy completion of Monopoly (WP) takes fifteenth, and Bejeweled Live + (WP) and Plants vs. Zombies (WP) scrape into the bottom two places, both with the exact same amount of starters, 164.

Games Completed
22,861 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 53,073 games between them (1,790 different games).

Although new releases dominate on the Retail Games Started front, on Games Completed it's a different story as DLC is the order of the day. New, easy, DLC packages give big completions for Mass Effect 3, Battlefield 3 and Halo 4 in the top three, with Sleeping Dogs, Dead Space 3 and Assassin's Creed III following in fifth, sixth and seventh. One game that continues to pull in high completions without DLC is Far Cry 3, which takes over 800 completions and a fourth place position.

The easiest completion of March's new releases, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, takes eighth place with 590 completions, whereas the only other new releases to appear are Tomb Raider in tenth, despite some grindy multiplayer, and Bioshock Inifinte right at the the bottom with 200 completions. Expect that number to rise significantly next month.

Top Retail Games Completed

Unsurprisingly with how easy they are, the same titles appear at the top of Arcade Games Completed as did with games started. Pulling in completions between 1,400 and 2,100 are The Walking Dead and all of the SEGA Vintage Fighter titles. Only two new releases make the table, Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds in eleventh with 200 completions and WRC Powerslide in twelfth with 130.

Although they don't appear on Games Started, a selection of the easiest sale titles from the month make it onto Games Completed, including A World of Keflings, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure HD, Deadlight, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013, Mark of the Ninja and Dead Rising 2: Case Zero.

A title we didn't previously expect to see on the table was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game after the Online Multiplayer and Wallace Pack DLC was consistently delayed. Finally released this month, the pack also proved an easy completion, plonking the game high on the table in seventh with 320 completions.

Top Arcade Games Completed

Shark Dash proves a very easy completion as well as a popular title on Windows Phone Games Completed, pulling in 270 completions and a comfortable first place position. It is also the only new release to make the table. Only two of the multiple sales titles from the month make into onto the chart, with the very easy Monopoly in fourth with 140 completions and the fairly less easy Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles HD (WP) in eleventh with 75 completions.

Achievements Won
124,319 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 4,888,974 achievements online between them (63,687 different achievements).

All the places on Retail Achievements Won are split between the three big titles. Gears of War Judgment takes ten spots, half of the table, including the top four. Tomb Raider takes nine places, with the remaining spot being taken by a single Bioshock Infinite achievement, Written in the Clouds, the first story based achievement of the game.

Top Retail Achievements Won

Arcade Achievements Won presents distinctly less original material as the sales lead to the table being dominated by the popular and easy achievements of The Walking Dead in the top half and Sonic the Fighters in the bottom half. A single achievement, Treasure Hunter for Happy Wars, gets sandwiched into the middle thanks to a free ticket giveaway in the last week of the month from developers ToyLogic.

Top Arcade Achievements Won

Windows Phone Achievements Won is a much more one-sided affair than the other platforms' tables, with Shark Dash taking the lion's share of the places, although it doesn't quite manage a clean sweep thanks to the ever popular Wordament (WP) taking four places, including the bottom three.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

It's almost a dead heat at the top of Genre, with Shooter and Action-Adventure duking it out for the top spot. The combined weight of Gears of War Judgment and Bioshock Infinite overpower the likes of Tomb Raider to give Shooter the edge with 46,500,000 to Action-Adventure's 45,500,000. The rest of the table sees similar head to head battles, with Role-Playing taking lead over Action by only 25,000 in third and fourth places, whilst Racing beats Sports to fifth place by only 90,000.

That draws the month of March to a close here on Stats and thankfully the mating season here in the office, too. Unfortunately, we then enter the month of April; the month of spring showers and so-so releases.
