Achievement Preview Spotlight: DuckTales

If there's one thing I like better than a stroll down memory lane, it's ice cream. If there's one thing I like better than ice cream, it's whiskey. If there's one thing I like better than whiskey and ice cream, it's ice cream with whiskey in it. But let's get back to that stroll down memory lane.

Next week, every kid of the 80's/90's gets their wish and will be able to dive back into the classic NES game, DuckTales with DuckTales Remastered. We'll have our official review coming very soon, but, let's face it, most of you are going to buy it regardless, if only to pogo around on that cane one more time*.

With that in mind, let's dive in and see what kind of achievements WayForward Technologies has in store for their HD remake of our childhood classic, shall we?

As is the case with the most-recent of XBLA games, DuckTales Remastered contains 400G coming from twenty achievements. Of those twenty achievements, six of them are "Secret", so completionists take note. With the basics out of the way, let's shine the glorious light of Duckberg onto the remaining pops.

We'll kick things off with an achievement that represents what every rich person does with their money when they have more of it than sense.

Art Aficionado in DuckTales Remastered (Arcade)
Buy art in the gallery

I love art, but I'm not sure it's ever a wise investment since it can easily depreciate in value due to degradation from environmental factors/improper display and storage, the high possibility of forgeries, the likelihood of thefts, and its intrinsic insurability issues. In short, stick with Money Market Accounts, Roth IRAs, and Mutual Funds... or the Cayman Islands.

This has been "obj's Investment Minute", now back to our regularly scheduled Achievement Preview Spotlight.

Right... so... buy a piece of art and pop an achievement. That should be easy enough.

Moving right along into one of the many achievements you'll get for clearing stages.

Where No Duck Has Gone Before in DuckTales Remastered (Arcade)
Collect the Green Cheese of Longevity

In the event that the early 2000's destroyed your memory of the early 90's (Four Loko did that, I hear), Scrooge's quest throughout DuckTales was/is to recover tons of priceless artifacts. The Green Cheese of Longevity is just one of those artifacts. You'll also get achievements for recovering the Lost Crown of Ghengis Khan, the Giant Diamond of Inner Earth, the Coin of the Lost Realm, and the Sceptre of the Incan King.

Scrooge McDuck may be rich beyond your wildest dreams, but not rich beyond his wildest dreams; meaning this next achievement is very appropriate.

The Duck Who Would Be King in DuckTales Remastered (Arcade)
Collect $10,000,000

Best start saving and scrounging, son.

For those who may be too young to remember, classic NES-era platformers like DuckTales were incredibly punishing and difficult, making the gathering of heart containers (to extend your life bar) vitally important (pun intended). This next achievement is definitely an homage to that era of scrounging and searching for a bit more life.

Bless Me Bagpipes in DuckTales Remastered (Arcade)
Collect All the Heart Containers on Easy or Medium difficulty

If this remastered version of DuckTales retains some of the difficulty of its progenitor, popping this achievement may be more important than you think.

When it comes to picking the toughest, most arduous challenge in DuckTales Remastered, there really is only one possible pick.

Smarter than the Smarties in DuckTales Remastered (Arcade)
Beat game on Extreme difficulty

I don't think it's too much of an assumption to postulate that WayForward has included the "Extreme" difficulty as a special challenge to those grown-up kids who remember the controller-smashing days of yore. I will venture a guess that THIS will be the great Goliath that prevents some completionists from adding DuckTales Remastered to their trophy cases. Other tough pops of note would include: Connoisseur of the Arts (Unlock all art in the Gallery) and Look Ma, No Spats! (Enter the underground section of Amazon and climb up the other side using only the pogo jump).

DuckTales Remastered is no-doubt marketing itself as a trip down memory lane for those of us with fond recollections of those golden, NES days. Let's just hope that WayForward has been able to harness everything we loved about Scrooge's adventure and minimize that which we have whitewashed from our brains.

DuckTales Remastered is set to hit the Xbox LIVE Arcade next week. Keep your eyes peeled for our official review on Monday!

If there's an upcoming game or DLC pack that you'd like to see featured in the Achievement Preview Spotlight, be sure to let us know in the comments!
