It seems that not all of humanity stands behind the XCOM team, despite the overall alien threat which befalls them. 'Exalt' has emerged as a rogue organisation that wishes to harness the alien's technology for their own purposes in the upcoming expansion to XCOM: Enemy Unknown
, titled "XCOM: Enemy Within".
Why on earth would members of humanity do this? Senior Game Designer Ananda Gupta from Firaxis let Joystiq in on the group's nefarious motive:
When they came to understand the goal of the alien invasion is the genetic perfection of humanity, the reaction of Exalt is, 'Why would we ever want to stop that from happening?' The idea that humanity would resist this is insane to them. They see themselves as the beneficiaries of that program, of genetic perfection, and they see themselves as the rightful beneficiaries of alien technology. XCOM stands in the way of both of those.
To fight back against this new threat, XCOM needs to now send in covert operatives to neutralize Exalt; as if they didn't already have enough to contend with! In any case, this new 'Security Breach' trailer from 2K Games International shows the lengths that Exalt will go to to get what they want.
The following screenshots show some in-game action against the renegade faction; it's clear that this clandestine group likes to play dirty in their quest for dominance. It's also clear that they do not care about the human cost of achieving their goal:
The "Enemy Within" content will be packaged with the upcoming XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Commander's Edition, which arrives on November 12th in North America and November 15th internationally.
