Microsoft Cancels 1 vs. 100

R.I.P. 1 vs 100.

Microsoft have today announced that the Guiness World Record-holding game - "Most contestants in a game show," a whopping 114,000 simultaneous players at one point during the beta - has been cancelled.

Microsoft Game Studios' General Manager, Dave McCarthy, had the following to say:
"When we started on this journey, we knew we were creating an entirely new genre of entertainment that would be a continually evolving concept. We're very proud of the '1 vs 100' team and their accomplishments, and are excited to apply what we've learned to future programming."
Bit irritating to not see a proper explanation as to why the game's been canned. You'd think the world record, the huge, positive fan response, and the high ranking on the weekly Live activity list during the second season would warrant a third, but I guess not.

The silver lining on this grey cloud however, is that MGS have teased that they are now "focusing their skills and applying the technology used to develop "1 vs 100" to new projects that will be unveiled in the future." So while a third season of 1 vs 100 is not on the cards, perhaps we'll be seeing a similar Xbox Live game show at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Edit:
The 1 vs 100 team have posted a rather length blog post thanking everyone over on their Xbox.com page. Check it out here.
