TA Top Five: Deadliest Protagonists

By Marc Hollinshead, 2 years ago
What pops into your mind when you hear the word "deadly"? Is it something crazy and insane? Or is it something more subtle; powerful, yet sneaky? How about if I told you a person was deadly? Many would conjure up the idea of an evil, skillful and ruthless individual, but there'd be others who would imagine someone totally different. In the world of gaming, we have been presented with many deadly characters who possess powers and abilities far beyond our own. We've also seen people who have deadly personalities and simply staying away from them altogether is the best way to go. In this week's "Top Five" list, we're taking a look at some of the most deadly protagonists you'll ever meet. They may represent different ideas of the concept, but they are deadly people to control nonetheless.

5. Grand Theft Auto V - Trevor Phillips

Trevor definitely fits into the "crazy and insane" definition of the word. The first time we meet him in Grand Theft Auto V, it's obvious that he is a man who wouldn't blend in a normal crowd. He is by no means skillful or subtle; far from it, actually, but he is a very dangerous person. Trevor's personality is enough for you to know that if you get on his bad side, you're utterly screwed. As the game's story progresses, we find out that Mr. Phillips isn't *completely* bad, but I say that very lightly as the crazy outweighs the normal by a long shot. When switching to him in free roam, you'll find him beating up random civilians in Los Santos, screaming at others, and even waking up next to a pile of dead bodies. Tread lightly around Trevor Phillips, because if you set him off, there may well only be a smoking crater left at the end of it.

4. Assassin's Creed II (Xbox 360) - Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Xbox 360) - Ezio Auditore

Ezio is certainly not a horrible man. He is always willing to help those who are in need. His enemies, on the other hand, are simply walking corpses as far as the legendary assassin is concerned. When this man holds a hidden blade, he can lay waste to all who oppose him in a matter of minutes without any witnesses. The art of stealth is second nature to Ezio as years upon years of training has refined his skills to the point that he is almost unstoppable when given the proper arsenal. Even when faced with a horde of soldiers out for his blood, Ezio is able to defeat his opponents in a flurry of swings and dodges before they get the chance to aim their guns.

3. Bayonetta

Bayonetta 1

When players were presented with this dazzling beauty, there was no denying she was one heck of a looker. Even more astounding are her skills on the battlefield. This umbra witch has abilities far beyond those of a normal human being. Dodging attacks by the skin of her teeth, outrageous combos with suitably outrageous weapons, and summoning demons from the hair off her own head is what this lady is about. As you control Bayonetta, you can easily see how elegant and fluid she is in her movement as she tears open the bodies of those devious angels who are trying to put her down. If you dare to double cross this woman, you're in for some torture, which will probably involve being kicked up the backside with your head on a guillotine.

2. Devil May Cry - Dante

The son of Sparda is one the most iconic characters in gaming. Dante's cool attitude, mind-boggling attacks, and that dashing red coat make him a deadly protagonist indeed. In the original Devil May Cry, we saw the potential that Dante had for further instalments, and by Devil May Cry 3, he was an unstoppable killing machine. As you switch from his different styles of fighting, a beautiful display of crimson slaughter flashes on the screen. Similar to Bayonetta, Dante has an insane list of combos that can be strung together to create an awesome killing frenzy. The fact that he always keeps his cool even when the odds are against him makes those combos just that extra bit sweeter. If he activates his devil trigger as well, then you're in for a treat. The big question, though, is who would win in a fight? Dante or Bayonetta?

1. Hitman - Agent 47

Agent 47

This man is deadly through and through. Give Agent 47 a target, and they will be as good as dead. The saying "silent but deadly" definitely comes into play here. Anyone who has played the Hitman games will know that 47 is able to assassinate a multitude of targets through very dangerous, yet discrete means. Whether that's poisoning their food, casually blowing them up while no one's looking, strangling them and hiding them away, or just the classic snipe them in the head from a three-story window method, 47 will masterfully execute whoever is next on the list. He may not have special powers from another dimension, but he is the most deadly assassin you will ever come across. All he needs is some anesthetic and fiber wire to become the world's most lethal human being. If you see that famous barcode, you better get out of there fast!

It's a dangerous world out there. No matter where you are, there could be an assassin just waiting for the perfect moment to pierce your skin with a poisonous blade, or a devil in disguise who is ready to rip you apart. Either way, we have seen protagonists of all shapes and sizes in games who have all sorts of abilities, weapons and powers. Of course, it's impossible to list them all here as there's just so many! You've seen our favourites, so who would you say is your most deadly protagonist?

The TA Team will be bringing you The TA Top Five every Sunday until we run out of coolness to debate and discuss. If you have an idea for a Top Five you'd like us to do, be sure to let us know in the comments!
