No Man's Sky Not Delayed

By Rebecca Smith, 2 years ago
On December 24th, Guildford was one of many places within the UK to suffer from severe flooding. Guildford-based studios, Born Ready Games and Hello Games were both hit in the chaos. Whereas Strike Suit Zero developer Born Ready had enough warning to move their computers and development kits to higher ground, No Man's Sky developer Hello Games was hit badly. They lost all of their PCs, furniture, dev-kits and other equipment and their studio was badly damaged. To compound the issue, they're now having problems with insurance and the cost of replacing what was lost.

However, Hello Games has not let the flooding get them down. Some of the staff have moved to a new temporary location while others are working from home. They have built themselves a "make-shift post-apocalyptic set of workstations" to be able to continue work on their upcoming title. Eventually the target is to rebuild their old studio from scratch or to set themselves up in a new location. I'll let Sean from Hello Games explain:

It feels like that moment in a film, where the heroes are down, but not defeated. They are scattered across the world and they have to rebuild. Our next few weeks/months are going to be a training montage and running across mountains. Quick Cut! Dave’s punch dancing. Quick Cut! Hazel’s firing an arrow at a target… getting closer. Quick Cut! Alex has nunchucks in silhouette on a mountain peak. You get the idea. BE EXCITE.
The studio has confirmed that they will not let No Man's Sky be affected by delays:

At times recently I’ve wanted to be depressed, to wallow, but it’s impossible surrounded by this team. They are literally unstoppable. If we’ve lost some work, we’ll make up the time. We’ll steal dev-kits. We’ll work on a boat. Whatever it takes (not actual stealing… maybe :)

[...]Maybe Christmas was a bad time for this to happen, but New Year’s couldn’t be better for a fresh start. I couldn’t be more excited for 2014. Oh and a minute ago I saw something amazing Dave just got working in No Man’s Sky (I can’t help but see it, because he’s practically sat on my lap). Watch this space and all that, we’ll share more soon.
