Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike Online In Development

Capcom Devours Character Limit With Ease

Written by dropK1CK ninJA on 26 July 10 at 00:30

Via IGN:

At a panel Saturday at Comic-Con, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono announced that Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition was in the works.

No other details on the follow-up to the "Super Hyper Yadda Yadda" version of Street Fighter II were given. All we know is that it won't be out for a while.

But hey, something to look forward to in 2011.
For those not familiar with Street Fight 3, Third Strike it was the second and final expansion to the Street Fighter 3 game. It built on what the first expansion Second Impact has brought to the table.

Gameplay-wise Street Fighter 3: Second Impact did the following (via Wikipedia):
Released on October 1997, the second installment of Street Fighter III brought back all the characters from the first game and introduced two new ones: Hugo and Urien. Yun and Yang from the first game also became separate characters, with Yang receiving his unique set of Special Moves and Super Arts to distinguish him from Yun. Series' recurring hidden character Akuma also returned as a secret computer-controlled challenger and selectable character. Thus the playable character roster increased to 14. In addition to the regular Akuma, a non-playable computer-controlled version named "Shin Akuma" also appears in the single-player mode.

In addition to Super Arts, the player can also perform slightly more powerful versions of their Special Moves called EX Specials. By using a certain portion of Super Art gauge, the player can perform an EX Special version of a regular Special Move by inputting the command and pressing two attack buttons instead one. Other new abilities added to the game are "grapple defense", the ability to escape from a throwing attack, and "personal action", a character-specific taunt.
According to Wikipedia, Third Strike further expanded the roster to 20 and added a new combat technique:
Released on May 1999, the third and final installment of Street Fighter III brought back the classic Street Fighter II character Chun-Li, along with four new characters (Makoto, Remy, Q and Twelve), extending the selectable roster to 20 characters with Akuma now a regular character. All of the returning characters from the previous Street Fighter III games were given new stages, endings and even voice actors, continuing the overall storyline from where the first two games left off.

The commands for Air Parries, Throws/Holds and Leap Attacks were changed from 2nd Impact. Additionally, the player can perform a "Guard Parry" or a Parry during a Guard Stun if the timing is right. A "Guard Parry" is also known as a "Red Parry" due to the fact that the character turns red when performing it. The game also introduces a grade-based "Judgement System", in which the winning player in a single or two-player match is graded after the match based on Offense, Defense, Techniques and Extra Points. Special Points are also awarded after fulfilling special requirements.
The playable roster should be: Akuma, Alex, Chun-Li, Dudley, Elena, Gill, Hugo, Ibuki, Ken, Makoto, Necro, Oro, Q, Remy, Ryu, Sean, Twelve, Urien, Yang, and Yun.

IMO 3rd strike was one of the finest SF games to date, it introduced Makoto, Ibuki, Dudley and Sean to boot. Although i have strayed away from fighters in the last few years, i cannot distance myself from them completely, after all they were an important part of my gaming backbone.
So to hear of one of the greats making a comeback i can't help but feel nostalgically good. (cue Golf Clap)

I had a feeling that this would come to Xbox Live Arcade. I hope that it offers more in the way of a backstory, as my only experience with this game come from the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on PS2. I didn't understand ANYTHING about the game. What's to understand, you ask? Sure it's a fighter, go beat up those people until your the champion, but with really exceptionally odd characters like: Necro, Oro, Q, Twelve, and Gill, I needed SOME kind of explanation as to their motives and backgrounds. It would be nice to finally understand what the hell that was all about.

3rd strike is the most balanced fighter to date. I can definitely tell MVC3 will be as cheesy as the 2nd one, and have the looks of SF4. If I was forced to play one fighter for the rest of my life, it would have to be SF 3 3rd Strike.

PLEASE!!!!! any hardcore player will tell you that SF4 or SSF4 have SERIOUS!!! problems with the balance of their characters... you can use X character to beat Y easily!!! and characters like Makoto or Dan... or Hakan... NO ONE USE THEM!!! they are HELLA BAD!!!!!

Third Strike is the best Street Fighter game... and will be until Third Strike Online!!!

We all knew this was coming, and it's nice to see it finally confirmed. Now we'll have the latest version of each Street Fighter available for play online. And no, the EX games don't count. laugh I was originally thinking they would release this game as a build-up to the third/final version of Street Fighter IV. But now with both MvC3 and then SFxTK coming out, I have no idea when they'd be able to push out a new SFIV title. I guess if they wait a couple years, unlike the somewhat-quick release of Super SFIV, people won't complain as much about them milking us off one specific title.

I'd love to see Pocket Fighter for Live Arcade, too. I'd say it's certainly possible, but it's not likely. Vampire Savior 3 (or Vampire Chronicle) would make more sense, first. There are plenty of other fairly-successful Capcom fighters I'd love to see as well. Some Dreamcast favorites like the second Justice Gakuen (Rival Schools), both Power Stone games, etc. Or for that matter, the rest of the "Versus" series. Children of the Atom, Marvel Superheroes, X-Men versus Street Fighter, Marvel versus Street Fighter, and MvC1. All of which I liked better than MvC2, despite a much-smaller character roster in each.
