Kingdom Come: Deliverance Discusses Combat

Throughout their Kickstarter campaign, developer Warhorse Studios has provided video updates on various aspects of their upcoming Medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Starting with the game world and followed by character customisation and horses, the latest video update discusses the first-person melee combat mechanics within the game.

Good combat mechanics is at the heart of every RPG and we are very proud of ours. It's based on real-time collision detection and inverse kinematics; technologies that were difficult to use for game-critical mechanics on previous generation hardware. The result is a combat experience that looks and feels believable and natural, yet is not constrained to few sets of canned animations that have to be executed in perfect synchronization. The system seamlessly integrates things like interaction with environments, different heights of opponents or uneven terrain. Our combat is a blend of tactics and timing, skills of the player and stats of the character.

The Kickstarter campaign still has nine days to go and will end on February 20th. With funding still trickling in, the company has smashed through some of their stratch goals too. As well as the live in-game period music, which will be recorded by Czech masters from ancient song books, and the symphonic orchestra soundtrack that had been unlocked at the end of January, there will also be a playable female character added to the game. The main protagonist of the game is a young male blacksmith, but there will now be a line of quests where players take on the role of a smart and stealthy female as she saves the lead character at the start of the game.

Today sees the addition of performance motion capture too. This will capture the movement of actors' bodies, facial expressions and voices to achieve realistic looking cutscenes and character dialogues. Warhorse is aiming for the same quality as that seen by gamers in Ryse: Son of Rome.

As impressive as the gameplay footage already looks, this title is still very much a work in development. The game is looking to be released towards the end of 2015.
