Hello, everyone! This week, our special guest is http://www.trueachievements.com/CiaphasCain+M41.htm
, an ordinary guy with an extraordinary job (at least for many at this site) in the gaming industry. Welcome, Ciaphas!B1ue: Tell us about your gamertag.
It's a Warhammer 40,000
reference. I really enjoy the 40K universe, so I chose the character whose leadership and battle tactics I relate with most.
Oh, and it's pronounced Kai-a-fass.B1ue: How long have you been gaming?
I have been gaming for as long as I can remember, somewhere in the range of 20+ years.B1ue: Do others in your family game, or are you a first-generation gamer?
I am a first generation gamer and probably the only gamer for the forseeable future.B1ue: What do your parents/significant other/friends have to say about your gaming?
They don't like that I spend the majority of time playing video games; they say I need to get out more. I have been outside before; the graphics and story are lacking.B1ue: Assuming you’re not a professional gamer, what’s your day job?
I'm not a professional gamer; however, I do work in the video game industry. I'm the Live Team Shift Lead at Wargaming Chicago Baltimore, basically a fancy name for Quality Assurance for World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition
.B1ue: That's amazing! I just did a review of that game and enjoyed it. What does your job entail?
Basically what my team and I do is monitor the live game, so if any of you wonder why I am playing World of Tanks
for 10 hours of the day, it's because I'm working. While we "monitor," we look for things that can only be found while playing on servers with a large number of players and variety of tanks. Specifically, we look at issues that players post on the forums to see if we can reproduce the issue they are seeing. If we can, we send it out to get fixed. We also post on the forums and PM players for more info. Aside from that, we also test the updates before they go live; we run specific tests that differ from the rest of QA. Our tests are specifically targeted on areas that the players will use the most.B1ue: What other hobbies do you enjoy?
I play Warhammer 40K
. I have three armies: Necron, Tryannid, and Tau allied with Eldar. I also enjoy reading graphic novels and watching television.B1ue: Of what real life achievement are you most proud? Would you give us some details?
Quitting my job at the body shop and pursuing a career in the video game industry. I landed my first QA job at Netherrealm Studios working on Injustice: Gods Among Us
. Once that contract was up, I saw that Wargaming was hiring for their new studio in Chicago. I applied, got a call back in a few hours, and had an interview scheduled for the next day. The following week, I started working at Wargaming and have been here ever since.B1ue: What’s your favorite game of all time on any console? What makes it special?
Ciaphas: Final Fantasy VII
was the first game I purchased with my own hard-earned money. I spent so much of my time doing everything possible in that game, I probably played it for an entire year if not more.B1ue: I love that game, too; it was the first Final Fantasy I ever played, and I love a lot of the FF's.
Do you remember the first game you played? What’s your fondest memory of it?
Ciaphas: Super Mario Bros
. on the NES -- I remember reaching World 1-2 and getting on top of the level, if you will, and running across the bricks to the end where there were the three pipes leading to other worlds. I thought I was so cool ant that I had broken the game because I found something nobody knew about.B1ue: If some evil spell allowed you to own only a single game for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why?
If said game kept getting new content, I would have to go with Titanfall
. I really enjoy the movement style mixed with FPS. Oh, yeah, and dropping titans on everything, I can't get enough of that.B1ue: What part of the world do you live in? If I were to visit, what sights would I have to see?
I live in Chicago, Illinois, nicknamed Chiberia this past winter (or current winter rather -- it's not over yet). You would have to see The Bean sculpture in Millennium Park and the Chicago Picasso at Daley Plaza.B1ue: Any games you regret putting on your gamertag?
Ciaphas: UFC Undisputed 2009
, Ghostbusters: The Video Game
, Naughty Bear
, Street Fighter IV
, Super Street Fighter IV
, and Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
.B1ue: Why these games in particular?
UFC and Ghostbusters
both have glitched achievements preventing me from getting 1000g. Naughty Bear
was not as fun as I thought it would be, and the effort required to get all the achievements is more than I am willing to put in. I only played Street Fighter IV
because my buddy bought it, and we played it once, then he talked me into getting Super Street Fighter IV
and again played it once. I am not very good at Street Fighter
, and, again, I don't have the time or patience to finish either of them. Finally MK vs DC had terrible controls, and I just can't deal with them. I will probably eventually finish that, but not in the near future.B1ue: I can see how that would frustrate you. I noticed you had a 95% completion rate. That's amazing!
If you were forced to change your gamertag, what would you change it to? What would the new tag reflect about you?
It would probably be another Warhammer
reference, possibly Tau-related.B1ue: Tell us about your gamer pic. Why did you choose that one?
My gamer pic is Ender from the Enders Game
movie, I really enjoy the Enders Game
universe, if you will. I have read the entire Ender
series and really enjoy Ender as a character.B1ue: Do you have any particular gaming pet peeves?
I hate when people don't mute their kinect and you can hear everything they are doing (or their kids crying or dog barking) -- just being rude with voice chat in general. I hate when people join game chat and have conversations with their friends about personal matters that nobody else cares about. How hard is it to join a party or private chat?B1ue: What upcoming game are you most looking forward to?
Ever since E3 last year I have been looking forward to Sunset Overdrive
. They only showed that one clip at E3, and there has been no new info on it since. The teaser looked really interesting. I don't know if it's the not knowing anything else about it or because it reminds me of Jet Set Radio
(another one of my favorite games).B1ue: Have you ever had a game you really looked forward to that you were disappointed in when it finally arrived? Tell us about it.
, I was so excited for Brink
. I would check their website every day for new info about the game; I thought it was going to bring the mobility of Mirror's Edge
to a shooter. I was so disappointed when it came out. I got all the achievements and never played it again. It was lacking in all areas: the mobility was medicore; the gameplay was okay, and the replayabilty was low.B1ue: What game are you most proud of completing? Why?
Ciaphas: Injustice Gods Among Us
because it was the first game I worked on. It is also a pretty tough one to complete.B1ue: What single Xbox achievement are you most proud of? Why?
Treasure Hunter in Final Fantasy XIII
because that took over 200 hours of playtime to complete. It was not that difficult, but it did take a really long time, and I was relieved when it finally popped.B1ue: Wow, that really did take a while. Congrats! As a fellow FF fan, I'm curious what you think of the newer Final Fantasies. I haven't liked them since Final Fantasy X. Of course, Auron totally rocks. ;-)
lol. To be completely honest, I don't mind the new Final Fantasies
(XIII and XIII-2); those are the only ones I have played since X. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
is sitting on my shelf. I actually enjoy the combat system. I really liked in XIII-2 how you could capture the monsters and use them in your party. From what I can tell, Lightning Returns
looks pretty cool, but still they are no FF VII.B1ue: That's for sure. I considered pre-ordering Lightning Returns just for the Cloud outfit and Buster Sword, but that seemed a bit foolish since I don't like FXIII. Oh, well...
If you found yourself dropped into a video game, which video game character would you most want to have your back?
It really depends on which game I was dropped into, but I would probably have to go with Albert Wesker; he can do pretty much anything.B1ue: In the same scenario, what character/creature would you least like to see headed your way?
SephirothB1ue: Best villain of all time...
Any characters you would like seen thrown into video game hell?
Any of your companions in Skyrim; they are always in your way. All they are good for is holding your loot.B1ue: I do find it's better to leave them at home if possible, but hell seems a bit harsh. lol.
Ever had any bad experiences online? How did you handle it?
Yeah, sometimes people get mad when they start losing, sending hate mail, talking trash. I just ignore them and block communication and then report them to MS.B1ue: Do you prefer single player or multi-player?
I prefer single player. I really enjoy the story telling in single player games. I also like wandering around and exploring the levels. You can't really do that in multi-player without getting people mad.B1ue: Do you have a favorite group of friends you like to play with? If so, how did you meet?
Yeah, there are four guys from work I play multi-player/co-op with regularly; we all enjoy the same types of games and play really well together since we all have a different play style.B1ue: If you could have a multi-player session with anyone in the world, whom would you choose? Why?
Well, I already played Injustice
with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, so my next choice would be Samuel Jackson. I want to see what it would be like when he gets mad and gets close to rage quitting.B1ue: Oh, man, that's cool. How did you come to play with Jay and Silent Bob?
While at Netherrealm before Injustice
launched, I don't know if you or anybod else remembers the battle arena videos. Battle Arena was a marketing thing done by Netherrealm, and what they did was set up a bracket with the characters they announced. Every week, the community would vote on who would win the match-up. But for every match-up, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes would talk about who would win in that particular fight. But back to the actual question, they came into the office one day during a marketing presentation to talk about how much fun they had doing the battle arena. After the presentation, they stayed at the studio and hung out with us for the rest of the day. It was really cool because they were just as excited to hang out with us as we were to hang out with them.B1ue: That really is cool. What a nice memory.
What other consoles do you own? What are your favorites on those platforms?
I have a PS3, but all I use it for is Netflix. I have most of the older consoles: NES, Sega, Sega CD, Sega Dreamcast, and N64, but I don't play them at all anymore.B1ue: Tell us about your gaming set-up.
I have two Xbox 360's and an Xbox One, all connected to a 46" HDTV, and a red chair. It's very simple, but that's all I need.B1ue: How do you use TA? Tracking, walkthroughs, solutions, sessions?
I mostly use TA for tracking and solutions. On rare occasions, I join a session for those tricky achievements I just can't seem to get legit. I usually only look at walkthroughs when I am playing a game just for the GS and I want to get it done quickly, usually for games I don't care about.B1ue: Do you ever contribute solutions?
I have never contributed a solution; every time I think I am clever and have found something worth posting, it has already been posted.B1ue: How has your gaming changed or evolved since coming to TA?
It has not really changed all that much. Solutions make it eaiser to get my achievements done while tracking helps me compare my achievements to other players.B1ue: What do you like and dislike most about the site?
I really enjoy my friend feed to see what friends are doing throughout the day. I dislike comments, not just here - everywhere. People find it necessary to be rude and nasty in comments. I get that everyone is entitled to opinions but I find no joy or interest in reading people's opinions.B1ue: How did you learn about TA? Have you signed up any friends to the website?
I stumbled across it once while googling achievements, best find ever. I have referred a handful of people to the site.B1ue: Have you made friends here?
Yeah, I have made a bunch of friends on site while boosting Call of Duty: World at War
, mainly BulgyDragonZord
because he set all of the sessions up. Also, I boosted Transformers: War For Cybertron
once, and we have been friends ever since. The final set of people I met are my fellow GTASC team mates boldfoxrd
, and Hizameon
.B1ue: Quite an international team - are you still in the running?
Yeah, we are still in it and going strong, I have not been able to contribute to the team as much as I would like due to my work schedule. But I have an awesome team, and I contribute as much as I can on the weekends.B1ue: That's excellent! I wish you good luck with it. :)
If you have a pro account, what’s the most number of forced scans you’ve done in a day?
I don't have a pro account; I only need one scan a day.B1ue: If you could have a game handcrafted just for you, what would your perfect game be?
It would be open-world survival horror with gameplay similar to Fallout
, but survival horror.B1ue: Is there anything you’d like to see added to TA’s functionality?
Nothing. I am happy with the services that TA offers.B1ue: Why do you choose TA over other gaming sites?
I prefer TA because it has everything -- tracking, solutions, walkthroughs, leaderboards, boosting sessions that are easy to manage.B1ue: Do you have a “claim to fame” in gaming? If so, what is it?
Not that I can think of. I see myself as a fairly average achievement hunter.****************

**********************B1ue: Is there anything in particular you want the TA community to know about you?
I'm a bit of a loner; if I don't join your party or game, don't be offended. Sometimes, I prefer to just game alone.B1ue: Is there anything I haven’t asked that you want to talk about?
Don't PM me with World of Tanks
questions or complaints. If you have an genuine issue with the game, bring it up on the forums, and I will see it.B1ue: Any shout-outs you want to make before we go?
Warren Wilkes, my lead QA at Netherrealm for giving me my first job. Derek Kirtzic, a really good personal friend who is a designer at Netherrealm, who pushed to get me the QA job. Everyone here at Wargaming; they make my job really enjoyable. All of my friends here on TA. Last but not least, the two people I work with every day, Jared Pace: Live Team Lead and Rory Prendergast: Live Team Associate.
And that's it for this week, folks. Thanks so much to CiaphasCain M41 for taking the time to tell us a little about his world. Come back in a couple of weeks for our next guest, EdibleMessiah
Come back to see me, and...let's talk.
Just a friendly reminder that I am currently not taking applications for the Community Interview because of the huge waiting list I already have. When I work down some of the back log, I'll let you know. ~B1ue
