Grave Successfully Funded

Grave, a self described open world, surrealist survival horror experience from Broken Window Studios, has been successfully funded on Kickstarter. The indie horror surpassed its funding goal of $30,000 and ended its campaign at 01:00 (EST) on April 28th 2014.

But what is a surrealist survival horror experience?

Inspired by classic horror games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, Grave seeks to blend the classics with modern games like Amnesia, Outlast, or Slender: The Arrival. The game takes place in a surrealist dreamscape that changes itself as the game progresses.

The open world will feature a full day and night cycle. During the day players are encouraged to explore what has changed in the world during the night and fortify their position. During the night they have to survive against creatures from the darkness, either by staking out a fortified position or tooling up and going out into the night.

Unlike some of the games that inspired it, players in Grave aren't helpless. Players can fight back with an arsenal of light based weaponry. But different types of enemies will react to light in different ways; some will die, but others will only be afraid, and some will even be attracted. Here are some of the weapons we have been told about so far:

Matches - For lighting your way in a pinch or for starting fires
Flashlights - Powerful focused beams can ward off creatures, but be careful. Some will be attracted to the light instead of hurt. Different types of flashlights will have varying effects.
Gasoline - Use to power generators and create temporary fortresses, or pour on the ground and ignite the pools.
Flashbangs/flares - Throw these for a quick reaction, either to lure enemies toward them or cause heavy damage.
All of these weapons are themselves multi-purpose depending on play style and player choices.

Grave is slated to be released in early 2015 for Xbox One.
