More Titanfall DLC Info Drops

By Jonathan Barnes, 2 years ago
As we draw ever closer to May's drop of new Titanfall maps in the form of the "Expedition" pack, we gain more knowledge, insight, and visuals. Today's info drop comes from designer Geoff Smith, who takes gamers through the conception, design and finished product screenshots of the Runoff Map.

Let's start with the first sketch:

Runoff 1

According to Smith, Runoff was initially sketched out in the early phases of planning and was set to be part of the original Titanfall map offerings, but had to be cut due to time constraints. When DLC planning began, Runoff re-entered the conversation. As one could expect from game development, a lot of changes occurred to the game in between the time this original sketch was floated past and the final product that shipped to gamers. Some overhaul was needed.

Runoff 2

Unlike many of the other maps in Titanfall, Runoff was set as an experiment to see if a small map could be made that would still allow Titans enough mobility and movement options so that they didn't feel constrained or limited.

Smith elaborates:

The core concept of the level is multiple layers of paths: concrete canals filled with water and trash below, and upper levels that are cleaner and more industrial. I thought the canals would be cool for Titans to fight in, with Pilots able to jump across them. I also set out to make more choke points in the level, something that is pretty hard to do in our game, at least for Pilots with their enhanced mobility.

Runoff 3

Runoff's center features three main buildings. The largest building houses two large inlet tubes in the center of it. The other buildings are connected with sky-bridges and billboards that can be parkoured across. The trench below the buildings is being referred to as the "central artery" of the map. If a Titan falls down into these trenches, they'll have to travel to either end of the map to find a ramp back up.

In "Capture the Flag" matches, the flags will be located at either end of the trench path.

Runoff 5

In "Hardpoint" matches, only Hardpoint "B" can be captured while in a Titan, but both "A" and "C" allow a Titan to see and shoot into them.

Runoff 4

The "Expedition" Map Pack for Titanfall is still set for a May release. You can purchase it for $9.99 (or your regional equivalent) or buy the "Season Pass" which will contain the "Expedition" Map Pack as well as two other (to-be-revealed) content packs for $24.99.
