First Look at Sunset Overdrive

In addition to the details released yesterday, Insomniac Games has also released a gameplay trailer, showing some of the why, the who and the how of Sunset Overdrive.

While we highly recommend checking out the trailer for yourself - it's pretty awesome! - we can give you the low-down of what the trailer shows. First off, "an omnipotent voice from Insomniac Games" introduces Sunset Overdrive - "in short, it kicks ass" - followed by the briefest look at the story. It's 2027, Fizzco has released a new drink, Overcharge Delirium XT, and now there's a outbreak of mutants.

Then we meet a couple of the factions that you'll be interacting with in the game. There are only two explicitly named so far: Troop Bushido - Scouts mixed with Samurai - and the Fargarths, Live Action Role Players (LARPers for short) whose fantasies have become reality thanks to the events of Sunset Overdrive. They are by no means the only groups, however, as a screen shows various different looking silhouettes, alluding to a variety of factions being present in the final game.

Next, we move on to a couple of named enemies, the Hurker and the Blower. The Hurker is a giant mutant, throwing smaller enemies at the player, and the Blower is an enemy whose arm has mutated with a leaf blower. Again, much like with the factions, there are hints of some other, rather wacky-looking enemies in the final game.

Straight after that come some of the weapons that you'll be using to take on those aforementioned enemies. Insomniac's knack for crazy weaponry is in full force here, with glimpses of a bowling ball launcher, helicopters with guns attached, and the "TnTeddy", a gun that shoots teddy bears strapped with sticks of dynamite. Alongside today's trailer, Insomniac has provided more information for a few of the weapons that will be available.

TnTeddy: Rather than use something so mundane as dynamite, the TnTeddy launches cute teddy bears that explode on impact. The idea belonged to one of the game designers -- who sent out an email with no text, but an image of a teddy bear, a plus sign, and a pack of dynamite. Fire it when your style meter is ramped up (achieved by shooting enemies while grinding, taking out groups of them at once, etc.), and the plume from the resulting explosion takes the form of a teddy bear.

AK-FU: Like an AK-47 but with 1000% more middle finger, this assault rifle is accurate as all get-out, and holds plenty of ammo. It's not great for huge groups of enemies, however -- so don't bring it to zombie prom.

Captain Ahab: A bottle of overcharge powers this harpoon, which can take out an enemy in a single shot. On impact, they'll spill forth Overcharge from their tubular bodies, drawing mutants which scramble to the floor to get a sip of the sweet, sweet elixir that infected them in the first place. While they're down, well... you know what to do.

High Fidelity: A gun that fires vinyl records -- and you better believe that you will hear the songs on them playing as they fly through the air. Like many of the game's more left-field ideas, this was one that seemed absurd until a designer stuck it in... and it worked, resoundingly well. These death-records are great to fire into busy areas teeming with zombies, as the LPs will actually ricochet around objects in the game world before hitting their targets.

Hover Turret: A so-called "fire-and-forget" weapon, this sucker launches a miniature helicopter equipped with a 9mm pistol, which fires at nearby enemies.

Excalumune: An upgrade to your standard melee weapon, chock full of electricity and fire effects. Not suitable for children.

Roman Candle: A veritable laser light show of a weapon, it fires out multicolored shots that fizzle and crack as they dance about the screen. Its high spread makes it great for dealing with large groups of mutants. And it's festive, too!

The final gameplay elements shown in the trailer are "Amps", special abilities that your character will be able to use. There are over 50 available in the game, with highlights including flames shooting out beside you when you grind rails, explosions when you bounce, and summoning twisters. These "Amps" will be crafted from items found in Sunset Overdrive's environment and can also be used to upgrade the weaponry to make them even wackier than they already are.

Then, at the very end, we are left with the information that there will be a "Day One" edition of Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac has detailed exactly what you will receive with this edition. It includes the "Nothin' but the Hits" gun (an overcharged High Fidelity), the "Hardcore! Hammer" (a baseball bat with spiked dumb-bells attached), and last, but certainly not least, the "It's Me! Fizzie!" outfit, allowing you to dress up as the mascot for Overcharge Delirium XT.

Honestly, I can't wait to hear even more about the game. It looks like Insomniac took a little from some games that I really love (Dead Rising, Ratchet and Clank, Jet Set Radio. Mirror's Edge and Infamous), stuck all of it in a blender, and the result is Sunset Overdrive. The game itself is being described as "the game Insomniac has been building up to for 20 years".

All of this is a "tiny slice of the pie" according the omnipotent narrator with more to be shown at a later date (E3 perhaps).
