TA Gaming Stats - May 19th to 25th 2014

By Chewie, 2 years ago
This report is for the period May 19th to May 25th 2014.

After the nutso time travel shenanigans two weeks ago, my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, and I needed a well-deserved break. We took a week off in the sun, sipping sangrias and lounging on the beach, and now we're back and raring to get back into the numbers. So, this week we have a double bill of Stats, starting here and ending here. We're going to take things easy this week, so pour yourself a cup of chai, pull up the ergonomic futon and enjoy some of the numbers from here on TA.

Games Started
30,614 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 41,685 games between them (1,896 different games).

Typical! I take a break and we're hit with a big(gish) new release on the One. Classic shooter sequel/reboot Wolfenstein: The New Order (Xbox One) marches the goose-step onto the table with 6,000 starters, some of the bigger release week numbers for the One. Not huge like Titanfall (Xbox One), but a lot bigger than last week's Super T.I.M.E. Force (Xbox One). Oh isn't that cute. A few of the Statisticles think the goose-step literally means walking around like a goose. Little do they know.

Speaking of Super Time Force, the run-n-gun title slips from first to fifth, dropping by over 1,100 starters to around 270. That puts it below Titanfall and other recent release, Child of Light (Xbox One), in second and third, and...Watch_Dogs (Xbox One) in fourth?!? Yes, despite not being out yet, the hack-em-up manages to take a pretty high spot on the table with almost 290 starters, presumably thanks to review copies and pre-orders arriving early, much like Wolfenstein did last week.

Elsewhere, other recent releases Nutjitsu and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Xbox One) slip off the table, to be replaced by the consistently popular big-hitters Ryse: Son of Rome and Dead Rising 3 at the bottom.

"Games with Gold" freebie title Saints Row: The Third manages to improve on its number in the second week of its freeness, passing over the 4,000 starters mark in first. That leaves the 360 version of Wolfenstein: The New Order to languish in second place with fewer than 790 starters. That's less than a fifth of Saint's Row's starters and less than an eighth of Wolfenstein's One equivalent.

A Namco Bandai sale helps put three titles on the table this week, with Ridge Racer Unbounded proving the most popular in fifth with 230 starters, followed closely by Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in sixth with under 220. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West brings up the rear, monkeying around in ninth with 170 starters.

Saints Row IV pops up in eighth with over 170 starters. I'm not entirely sure why. I presume it's due to the increased popularity of its predecessor causing people to investigate the later instalment. It was Saints Row 2 that was offered at a discounted price during the third game's free period. Yes, I know IV is currently on sale, but that sale started after the dates that these stats cover. I bet those 176 people feel silly.

There's nothing new on the arcade table this week, but that's not to say there weren't new releases. Unfortunately, the delayed 360 version of Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, released on the One back in December, didn't pull in enough numbers to make the table. Additionally, last week's new release, Super Time Force, slips from the table. That leaves previous "Games with Gold" titles like Dust: An Elysian Tail, Deadlight, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Toy Soldiers: Cold War to litter the table alongside the usual TellTale fare and free to plays like Warface and World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition.

The increase in numbers thanks to a reduction in memory requirements continues to give Temple Run 2 (WP) a boost in starters, growing its numbers from 340 to 370 this week and going from second to first place as Wordament Snap Attack (WP) slips from 840 to 350 starters a week after release.

Despite not appearing last week when it was actually on sale, enough TA'ers started Mass Effect: Infiltrator (WP) to put it into tenth with over 40 starters. This week's sale title, Final Fantasy (WP), on the other hand, doesn't show up.

Recent Microsoft freebie release and Minesweeper spin-off, Microsoft Treasure Hunt (Win 8), continues to build steam this week, going from second to first as it increases its starters from 430 to nearly 480. Like the WP version, Wordament Snap Attack (Win 8) slips from first to second, dropping by over half from 490 to 210 starters.

This week's sales title, 4 Elements II: Special Edition (Win 8), just manages enough starters, with 35, to put it in ninth place.

Games Completed
7,804 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,296 games between them (1,290 different games).

With so many new starters, no hugely grindy achievements and no multiplayer, it was almost a given that Wolfenstein had the potential to make the Completed table in its release week. Over 430 TA'ers powered through the game on all difficulties (well, the last level, anyway), collected all 132 gold items and uncovered all the secrets, to finish the game, putting it in first, above recent easy completions, Child of Light and Nutjitsu.

Despite slipping off the Started tables, Super TIME Force pulls in enough completions with over 150 to put it into fourth.

After its impressive lead on the table for weeks, Dark Souls II continues its slow descent, going from second with 90 completions to third with 70 this week. However, it isn't new titles that take its place on the top, it's just South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360) and Hitman: Absolution, which are simply maintaining higher completions with 90 and 75 in first and second.

The easiest of the four Saints Row games to complete at almost 17% completion percentage (a number sure to have dipped with all the recent starters), Saints Row: The Third manages to jump into fourth place with 70 completions, above Wolfenstein, which manages 60 in fifth.

Like on the Started table, Saints Row IV pops up to say hello for some strange reason. Not quite as strange as Assassin's Creed II (Xbox 360) in ninth though, which I can only put down to being free on "Games with Gold" like a year ago.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Games Completed

The completions for "Episode 3: In Harm's Way" from The Walking Dead: Season Two continue to roll in, keeping the game very securely in first place, despite a drop from 2,000 to under 1,400 completions.

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Games Completed

As an easy completion for a free-to-play game (almost 30% completion percentage), the increase in players for Temple Run 2 also boosts the completions by three times, jumping it from second with 40 to first with almost 120.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

With a very similar top half to previous weeks and very low numbers in the bottom, there's really not much to say about this week's W8 completions.

Achievements Won
68,342 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 806,634 achievements online between them (51,405 different achievements).

Wolfenstein clean sweeps it this week with a mix of story progression and perk unlocking. One interesting thing to note is that the choice-based achievement Fergus Saved appears in tenth. The counterpart achievement, Wyatt Saved, for making a different choice at the same point, doesn't appear and in fact has been unlocked by far fewer people (currently 73% for Fergus compared to 54% for Wyatt). This may be because saving Fergus gives health upgrades over Wyatt's armour boosts, or it may just be because Fergus is a dude.

Top Xbox One Achievements Won

Like last week, Saints Row sweeps the table with a very similar achievement list and distribution to last week.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Achievements Won

This is also very similar to last week, with the latest episode of Walking Dead taking the top eight spots, above two for Dust.

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Achievements Won

Last week Snap Attack managed a clean sweep, but this week Temple Run disrupts things, taking half the spots on the table, including the top four.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Last week's single Treasure Hunt achievement becomes five this week, including the top four. In fact Snap Attack takes the same exact spots here with the same exact achievements as it does on the WP table, just swap Temple Run with Treasure Hunt

Top Windows 8 Achievements Won

Wolfenstein gives Shooter the boost it needs to hop over Action-Adventure, going from under 4.5 million to over 7.7 million into first. Action-Adventure does manage to increase its own numbers slightly, from 6.2 to almost 7 million in second. Elsewhere, the boost to Action by Super TIME Force last week is lost now and it slips back below Role-Playing into fourth, dropping from 3 to 2.3 million.

That's all for this week's numbers, hack into the next one to see just how well Watch_Dogs does.
