Much like Capcom's Dead Rising 2: Case Zero
, THQ have today announced that their upcoming Red Faction: Armageddon
will also get a downloadable XBLA game before release to entice gamers.
Entitled Red Faction: Battlegrounds
, the game is a top-down vehicle combat game set with the RF universe. The prequel offers four-player co-op and makes use of both mechs and rovers . While details about the game are still being kept under wraps, THQ have announced that a number of the game's achievements will unlock "unique elements" in RF: Armageddon
when it releases next March.
Interestingly, while this will be THQ's debut XBLA game, you should be expecting more coming soon. The studio previously known as Juice Games (who funnily enough were the developers behind Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights
) have recently been renamed and rebranded as THQ Digital Warrington, with their focus solely on developing downloadable games from now on. This is all part of THQ's larger initiative to adapt to the shifting and diminishing retail market, with the Warrington-based studio abandoning boxed products entirely. The initiative is a key part of THQ's plans to expand their most important brands, building loyalty and creating awareness of their products.
THQ have teased more information about the downloadable games, stating that their studios are currently developing a handful of games based on their internally-owned franchises (including the previously announced Saints Row: Drive By
), as well as new original IPs.
No price or solid release date has been announced for the game, but it's scheduled to release three or four months before Armageddon
, so chances are we'll see it before the end of the year.EDIT:
Jumped the gun on this a little in seems. A few hours after I wrote this, THQ sent out a press release with more details about the game, quoted below.
