TA Gaming Stats - Sept 29th to Oct 5th 2014

By Chewie, 2 years ago
This report is for the period September 29th to October 5th 2014.

Welcome to the TA stats for the tail end of September and the opening days of October. This week the new releases continue to roll off the assembly line. The Statisticles have been particularly enjoying skidding around the tracks in Forza Horizon 2 (Xbox One). Unfortunately, they tend to do so in the wrong direction, in reverse, upside down (somehow). I didn't think you could end up a flaming wreck in Forza. They proved me wrong.

Games Started
46,637 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 68,013 games between them (1,910 different games).

Three new releases stomp into the top of the table this week. Forza Horizon 2 (Xbox One) takes the glory with the top spot thanks to its over 11,300 starters. It's followed in second by Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (Xbox One) with 9,600. In third, Chariot claims the position with its 7,700 starters, a number no doubt significantly higher than it would normally have got thanks to it also being October's "Games with Gold" freebie. Those three games weren't the only new releases this week, but unfortunately the likes of Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments (Xbox One) and Naughty Kitties don't pull in enough numbers to see them onto the table. Wait...Naughty Kitties?!

Looking further down the table, recent big releases FIFA 15 (Xbox One), Destiny (Xbox One) and Minecraft: Xbox One Edition claim the middle of the table and recent episodic adventure D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die manages to just cling on in tenth.

With Halo: Reach stepping aside to allow Battlefield: Bad Company 2 as the newest 360 "Games with Gold", the shooter sequel was bound to pull in big numbers. It claims over 3,500 starters in first place. Incidentally, that's over 1,000 more first week starters than Reach managed when it went free.

Like the One, new releases have some impact on the table, but aren't fully represented. Forza Horizon 2 doesn't quite break the 1,000 starter milestone in second, whilst spin-off fighter sequel Persona 4 Arena Ultimax takes sixth with 260 starters. Unfortunately, TV tie-in Falling Skies and Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments (again) don't make the grade. I wonder if this is clear evidence that, with the One starting to really hit its stride, developing games for the 360 is increasingly a bit of a waste. Or it might just be evidence that these aren't that popular games.

Sales dominate XBLA more than recent releases this week, as the discounted Assassin's Creed Liberation HD claims the top spot with just under 350 starters, whilst Far Cry Classic and Beyond Good & Evil HD take third and fifth. Slipping into second is last week's new release Slender: The Arrival, which drops from 600 to under 240 starters. Despite sales on multiple SNK titles this week, none of them make the table.

It's not like XBLA wasn't devoid of new releases this week but arcade racer Jet Car Stunts (Xbox 360) doesn't get anywhere enough the numbers it would need to make the table. Heck, right now, two weeks after release, only 40 people have started it.

After weeks of new releases on WP spoiling us, this week goes back to release-less normality. Continuing its rise up the table after going from ninth to third last week, Secrets and Treasure: The Lost Cities (WP), jumps up to first place after going from under 200 to exactly 300 starters. That leaves a trio of recent releases in its wake, with Age of Empires: Castle Siege (WP), FIFA 15 Ultimate Team (WP) and Tentacles: Enter the Mind (WP) taking second to fourth places.

With no Secrets and Treasure: The Lost Cities (Win 8) on the W8 table, Age of Empires: Castle Siege (Win 8) and FIFA 15 Ultimate Team (Win 8) are allowed to lead, both with very similar numbers to their WP versions.

Games Completed
5,125 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 6,732 games between them (1,196 different games).

The "IMC Rising" DLC for Titanfall (Xbox One) pushes the game up further up the table as more people complete it, from last week's fifth place with 100 completions to the top spot with nearly 190. DLC also affects the numbers of two other games on the table, with "Bad Blood" pulling Watch_Dogs (Xbox One) up from ninth with 55 to sixth with just under 100 completions and "Legends of the Lawn" putting Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox One) into tenth place with 45.

New release Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (Xbox One) makes a somewhat surprise appearance in third with 110 completions, suggesting that it's a fairly easy completion for a sandbox title. Then again, the large number of players and therefore completions could be more of a contributing factor. How long it stays on the table in the coming weeks will help us decide.

The recent DLC discounts for Mass Effect 3 continue to hold it in first place, only dropping by five completions to just under 55. Sales also help keep Borderlands 2 and Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures aloft, whilst the DLC gives Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare a One-like boost, but this time up into fifth place. Interestingly, Watch_Dogs doesn't get a boost like on the One. Similarly, FIFA 15 appears here in seventh place, whilst it doesn't make the One table at all.

Recent sales and easy completions rule the table, with The Walking Dead: Season Two still easily leading, despite dropping by a further 100 completions to under 240. On the sale side, recently discounted Valiant Hearts: The Great War stays in second, whilst this week's sale title and most popular starter, AC Liberation, lands in tenth with 25 completions. Last week's new release, Slender also sneaks into ninth with 30.

With server closure looming, the Doritos Crash Course 2 completions spike up this week from under 40 to over 50, pushing the game up from seventh to fourth. Similarly, server closure based completions for Ascend: Hand of Kul put it back on the table in eighth with 30. On "Ascend Watch", we see that the game grown by 28 completions to 886. Might it surpass the 1,000 mark before November 18th? At this rate, it's going to be a close one.

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Games Completed

Secrets & Treasure slips from the top spot behind consistently completed Temple Run 2 (WP) this week. Despite taking second last week, FIFA 15 is nowhere to be seen.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

On W8, Secrets & Treasure also slips a spot, this time from second to third. Despite not making the WP table, FIFA 15 takes sixth.

Achievements Won
93,957 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 1,398,437 achievements online between them (70,207 different achievements).

Forza is denied the clean sweep on its debut week by a single sneaky Shadows of Mordor achievement in ninth.

Top Xbox One Achievements Won

Battlefield: BC 2 doesn't let anyone sneak onto the table and takes the clean sweep.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Achievements Won

AC Liberation dominates, taking first, fourth, fifth and sixth. World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition claims second and third with two achievements from its recent "Title Update".

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Achievements Won

Despite slipping in games started, Age of Empires still rules here, with eight spots taken. Secrets & Treasure does manage to slip into third and fifth, though.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Like last week, Age of Empires isn't having any funny business and cleans up the whole table.

Top Windows 8 Achievements Won

With Battlefield: BC 2 buoying up the numbers, despite the drops from Destiny, Shooter remains in first, although it does drop from 12.8 to 11.8 million. Action sees a massive spike, going from fifth with 2.8 million to second with 7.4 million. This was because, before the game was released, Shadows of Mordor was put into the genre as a best guess. Now it's out though, it's been reclassified, so expect poor Action to slide back down next week. Racing also gets a boost thanks to Forza, going from sixth with 1.3 million to fourth with 5.7 million. Don't worry, that one's unlikely to be reclassified.

That's all for now. Join us next week when we'll have an alien or two in our midst, as well as some basketball action and game creation craziness.

Before you go though, hold up a lighter for the unfortunates who didn't make it this week: Falling Skies, Jet Car Stunts, Naughty Kitties and Sherlock Holmes x2.
