First up, the Xbox One Beta program has been officially slated for a January 15th kick-off. Players will only need to wait a few weeks into the new year before they can get in the pit with their monster-hunting antics, and it's completely free for any Xbox Live Gold members. Participants will be able to play the "Hunt" mode on any of the 12 included maps, and as one of 8 available hunters (Markov, Maggie, Val, Hank, Hyde, Griffin, Lazarus, and Bucket) or as one of two available monsters (Goliath and Kraken).
A mere two days later, on January 17th, Beta players will also be given exclusive access to a dynamic campaign titled "Evacuation"
. This is a unique playlist of maps and modes that change each time you play it. Best of all, any progress and unlocks achieved during the Beta will carry across to the full release version.Say Hello to the Wraith
Now, let's introduce the "Wraith", a brand new monster to be included in the full game. This nasty beast is described as a "space alien ninja Monster who warps around the battlefield, ripping into her enemies with her blade-claws". It seems the Wraith's strategy is to sneak up undetected and take a bite out of the hunters, and then escape to safety in the blink of an eye. However, it turns out this is the game's weakest monster, so it will not survive a head-on conflict. This cinematic trailer shows the nasty beast at work:
The Wraith's specific abilities include:Warp Blast allows Wraith to travel almost instantly to a target and create an explosion wherever she lands, dealing damage to everything around her.
Her Decoy ability spawns a dangerous clone of herself that attacks targets while distracting the Hunters. With the Decoy deployed, Wraith becomes invisible and the Decoy can be used strategically to escape from combat or allow the player to re-position themselves for surprise attacks.
Abduction steals hunters away from their teammates. During an abduction attack, Wraith travels large distances, grabs the target, and returns to her original location all within the blink of an eye.
Supernova creates a large arena for Wraith to fight in. Inside the Supernova, Wraith becomes a frenzied melee beast of pure energy as her scythe-like blades cut down just about anything in their path. If Wraith leaves the Supernova area, she returns to her normal state.
The following trailer shows actual in-game footage of the new Wraith in action, followed by some screenshots:
Since we are discussing monsters, we might as well show readers episode 5 of the "Evolution of Evolve" series, titled "Creating a Monster". Host Adam Sessler interviews several developers of the game in order to find out how these particular creatures were designed and rendered in the upcoming game:
Adam Sessler also takes time to get involved in a brand new livestream video where he showcases the Wraith in action, and some of the new strategies that will need to be employed by both monster and hunters. It runs for 90 minutes, so find a comfy position and enjoy:
Finally, players who are unsure about the capabilities of their internet connections can be assured that they are not being forgotton. Turtle Rock Studios has confirmed that Evolve will indeed allow offline play. As expected, this means any solo play will be with and against AI bots. However, the game will allow players to instantly switch between available teammates to ensure that the team does what you want it to do. The following mini-trailer gives a quick glimpse:
The full release of Evolve
will be arriving on February 10th, 2015.
