You may find it hard to believe that four years have passed since publisher Activision announced the discontinuation of development on any Guitar Hero
titles. Declining sales and the over-saturation of the market meant that plastic instruments were becoming a thing of the past. That was until last month, when Harmonix announced the development of Rock Band 4
. Not one to let a competitor steal the limelight, Activision has announced that they are back too and are reviving their music franchise with Guitar Hero Live
, developed by DJ Hero
The game offers two different game modes for players. The first, GH Live, puts players in the role of a lead guitarist trying their hardest to impress the crowd at a range of different venues. Be it a stage in a small club or the main stage at a music festival, you're the star of the show. If you play brilliantly, you'll have the crowd cheering your every move. If you play badly, however, the crowd will jeer and throw things at your head, all experienced from a first-person view.
This is the reaction that you want I didn't think that you could create a "Boring!!" banner that quickly.
Like previous games in the series, the GH Live set list for any venue will cover a variety of music types; rock, folk, EDM, hip-hop, country and pop are all included. Activision is offering "hundreds" of songs from artists like The Black Keys, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Gary Clark, Jr., Green Day, Ed Sheeran, The War on Drugs, The Killers, Skrillex, The Rolling Stones, The Lumineers, Carrie Underwood, Pierce the Veil and Blitz Kids. Unsurprisingly, more acts will be revealed in the months leading up to the game's release.
As mentioned above, there's a second game mode for players: GHTV. This is the game's version of the Quickplay mode found in previous Guitar Hero
titles. This mode offers a collection of playable music videos that cover a range of music genres and are being continuously updated to include the latest releases. There will be multiple music channels and themed shows from which to pick your videos to play on demand. Invite your local friends around to compete for the highest score or to complete challenges. If all of your gaming family and friends live some distance away, you can also compete against players from around the world.

As you may have noticed already, the note chart differs from that found in previous titles. This is because Guitar Hero Live
will be using a redesigned guitar controller with two rows of three buttons. Beginners will be using just the bottom three buttons. Players who consider themselves to be of medium ability will get to use both rows of buttons in patterns that try to mimic real chords. For Expert players, you'll get a more complex series of chord patterns and combinations to master. No longer will players have to stretch or move their fingers along the neck of the guitar.
Will the game's focus on guitar and the peripheral's re-design be enough to tempt you into a Guitar Hero
purchase, or will you prefer the traditional multi-instrument experience offered by Rock Band
? If you're an Xbox One player, the choice is yours. If you're yet to upgrade to the latest generation of consoles, you'll be glad to know that you won't be missing out on the music experience completely -- Guitar Hero Live
is available for Xbox 360 too when it launches this fall.
