Hello everyone and welcome back to another Community Interview! Sorry about the delay once again. This week, our guest is stoketom1986
, a gamer who, despite a huge obstacle, has managed to achieve something great. Let's give a great big TA welcome to stoketom1986! Tom:
Hello Marc and everyone who reads this!Marc: Gamertags almost always tell something about their owners. Tell us about yours.Tom:
It could have been very different could have been Froggy1986 due to a bet but instead it was stoketom1986 Stoke - the football team I support, Tom - My name is Thomas but everyone calls me Tom and 1986 is the year I was born. Marc: How long have you been gaming? Tom:
A long time, from about the age of 7-8 when trying to play my mom's and dad's Spectrum when we were allowed to play. Marc: Do others in your family game, or are you a first-generation gamer?Tom:
Other members of family do game, mainly my Dad who is more of a retro gamer and some of the modern day stuff like Assassins Creed
, though I will find him taking a look at what I'm playing then ask questions about it. Then there is my cousin who is older than us but when we were younger he used to let us play on his SNES when bored at our relatives. Marc: My dad used to play some violent version of Chess on the PC and Dungeon Keeper but that was it. Call yourself lucky! What do your parents/significant other/friends have to say about your gaming?Tom:
They take it as part of me so I've got no complaints and know I'll join them for a pint whenever they want one.Marc: Assuming you’re not a professional gamer, what’s your day job? Tom:
Sadly I'm not a professional gamer but I wish! At the moment since leaving university I have found it difficult to find a job. Been very close though though no cigar yet though it will happen.Marc: Believe me when I say I know what that's like. It sounds like you have a positive attitude, though, so keep it up and you'll get there!
What other hobbies do you enjoy?Tom:
The other hobbies that I have are sport and music based mainly. I have a season Ticket at Stoke City FC, also watch Rugby League and American Football (Dolphins) whilst going to the gym as well at the same time, I also go to gigs and Music festivals. I'm going to Download Festival again this year and seeing Muse and Slipknot again. Can't believe the last gig was November in Liverpool seeing New found Glory!Marc: I've seen Muse before and they were absolutely amazing. I'd definitely see them again! Slipknot isn't really my thing, though. Tell us about your home life – parents, spouse, children, significant other, animal companions? Tom:
Sadly I'm living back at my parents with my mom and dad since leaving University and will sort myself out again so can move back out. I would happily go back up north. I also have a sister and the cat looks at fish as if its dinner. Marc: Living with your parents isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I certainly understand what you mean in terms of having your own space. I look forward to having my own place as well!Of what real life achievement are you most proud? Would you give us some details? Tom:
This would be graduating for my degree in Business Leisure and Tourism Management at Edge Hill University, Makes me doubly proud as I have a learning dyspraxia which is hand and eye coordination and timing.Marc: I went to Edge Hill University too! Well...for a bit before I dropped out and went somewhere else. That's also awesome about making to the end with your dyspraxia. That's definitely something to be proud of!
What’s your favorite game of all time on any console? What makes it special? Tom: Fantastic Dizzy
on the Sega Mega Drive. Simple fun and very addictive. A must play if you have not played it.Marc: Do you remember the first game you played? What’s your fondest memory of it?Tom: Rockfall
on the spectrum. Dad never was able to finish the game off and always shouted Wazzock at the game. This was remade as Rocks and Gems
recently.Marc: If some evil spell allowed you to own only a single game for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why? Tom:
Football Manager would bring my two favourite things together in football and gaming.Marc: What part of the world do you live in? If I were to visit, what sights would I have to see? Tom:
Telford Shropshire in the UK is the place I live. To be honest, bar the Ironbridge if you like your history, it's like another town with shops, pubs and restaurants. Oh and we have a town centre as well as hosting a Music festival at Western Park being V Festival. Marc: Any games you regret putting on your gamertag? Tom: Meet the Robinsons
. Worst game ever on the 360, it nearly broke me. To the point where I did not want to turn on the Xbox and to the point where I didn't want to do anything.Marc: Eesh, that's some gaming hatred right there. Tell us about your gamer pic. Why did you choose that one? Tom:
Nothing in it really, I just thought it was freaky and cool.Marc: Do you have any particular gaming pet peeves? Tom:
No teamwork on games like Battlefield
when asking for ammo online and getting nothing as well as campers.
Marc: What upcoming game are you most looking forward to? Tom: Tom Clancy's The Division Marc: What game(s) are you currently playing? How are you finding it?
Tom: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
. For me it's the worst GTA and my least favourite, just not feeling it at all. Wish they had done Vice City
instead or number 3.Marc: What game are you most proud of completing? Why? DiRT 3
as everyone knows racing games are not my strongest strength. I made it through encouragement after I had got very close on the challenges which I was grateful for.Marc: What single Xbox achievement are you most proud of? Why? Tom:
For me, getting past the All Gillied Up Mission was harder than Mile High Club.Marc: In a slightly different vein, do you have a favorite achievement? One perhaps that you just really enjoyed attaining? Tom:
Because of the thing around it.Marc: If you found yourself dropped into a video game, which video game character would you most want to have your back? Tom:
Sam Fisher. Silent and deadly but gets the job done.Marc: In the same scenario, what character/creature would you most/least like to see headed your way?Tom:
Seth from Street Fighter
in very hard mode.Marc: Any characters you would like seen thrown into video game hell? Tom:
Sheva from Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360)
.Marc: She seems to come up a lot in this question. I'm not all that surprised to be honest. Marc: Ever had any bad experiences online? How did you handle it? Tom:
Usually I walk away from the game for a couple of days. If single player then it's about 6 months if I get stuck.Marc: Do you prefer single player or multi-player? Tom:
Single player or Co-op. Multiplayer feels like the same game different day to be honest with survival, team deathmatch and free for all.Marc: Do you have a favorite group of friends you like to play with? If so, how did you meet? Tom:
Yeah people I've met on here in sessions and some people I know in real life.Marc: If you could have a multiplayer session with anyone in the world, whom would you choose? Why? Tom:
Dave Grohl, Corey Taylor and Jack Black from 3 of my favourite bands and it would be a good and interesting night.Marc: Jack Black would be entertaining indeed! I don't know of the other two, though What other consoles do you own? What are your favorites on those platforms? Tom:
I have a PC and a 3DS. I only really use the PC for Football Manager
and the Command and Conquer
series. With the 3DS I only got for the Nintendo exclusives.Marc: Have you ever had a game you really looked forward to that you were disappointed in when it finally arrived? Tell us about it. Tom: Duke Nukem Forever
. Enough said.Marc: Tell us about your gaming set-up.
Telly on a chest of draws and games on the PC desktop. Not a lot really but it does the job.Marc: How do you use TA? Tracking, walkthroughs, solutions, sessions?
Mainly for tracking and what everyone is playing as well as joining in some sessions for mulitiplayer and co-op.Marc: How has your gaming changed or evolved since coming to TA?
I was a score whore but now I focus on completion and buying back old games that I had long forgotten I had played just to finish off.. If I get about 70% I would be very happy.Marc: What do you like and dislike most about the site?
I like all the stats and how it tracks everyone's at the same time, as well as the solutions. They are normally on the money.Marc: Not even a mention of something bad? Just the way I like it!
How did you learn about TA? Have you signed up any friends to the website?Tom:
I stumbled across the website looking for people on Project Gotham Racing 3
. People were advertising the website and I spoke to them, then ended up on here for a nose and there you go!Marc: Have you made friends here?
YesMarc: Keeping them a secret then... They must be some pretty decent friends!
If you could have a game handcrafted just for you, what would your perfect game be?
A gory and cartoony Sonic platformer and lazers.Marc: I'm imagining Sonic getting obliterated with a deadly lazer with blood flying everywhere... Could be interesting. :-P
Why do you choose TA over other gaming sites?
I can get what I want and other people are interested in the same things as I am.****************

There you have it, folks. Thanks very much to stoketom1986 for sharing his own story with us. Join me next time where I'll be with my next guest.
Come back to see me and, you guessed it... let's talk.
I'd like to remind everyone that because of the huge waiting list for candidates, I am currently not taking any applications for the Community Interview. When some of the backlog has been worked through, I'll let you know. ~ Marc
