Bizarre Creations, the Liverpool based development house behind the Project Gotham Racing franchise, Blur
, The Club
, Geomtery Wars
, Geomtery Wars 2
and the recently released James Bond 007: Bloodstone
is looking down a grim future.
Today, Activision made public that they have entered the legally required (in the United Kingdom) 90-day notice period before the studio is to be closed or sold. When contacted, Activision responded with the quote below:
Over the past three years since our purchase of Bizarre Creations, the fundamentals of the racing genre have changed significantly. Although we made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience. Bizarre is a very talented team of developers, however, because of the broader economic factors impacting the market, we are exploring our options regarding the future of the studio, including a potential sale of the business.
An official press release is expected within the next day or two, perhaps followed by information direct from the good folks at Bizarre Creations and then hopefully, someone fix my broken heart. Geometry Wars
have both earned a special place in my heart.
Huge credit to the NeoGaf forums for breaking this news, GiantBomb for the first follow up to confirm and Joystiq for clarification. It says something about Bizarre Creations as a gaming studio when a joint site effort forms on their behalf.
