Telltale's Batman Series Detailed at SXSW

There have been very few details about Telltale's upcoming Batman series since it was first revealed at The Game Awards last December, but that changed today at the SXSW Gaming Expo. During a panel called Batman: Telltale Unmasked, a team from the studio revealed the first real bits of information, including how the universe will get the Telltale treatment and when it is expected to premiere.

The series will take place in modern-day Gotham, but will not be tied to any existing iteration of the Batman universe in games, films, or comics. The story will at times focus on both Bruce Wayne and Batman, and decisions made by one may have a big impact on the next time spent with the other. Players will supposedly be given the option to approach specific key situations as either Batman or Bruce, with both choices creating new consequences to deal with. All of the choices that the player makes will help shape the Gotham that Bruce deals with during the day, and the action Batman faces at night.

The story will not follow the "extended Bat-family" such as Robin or Nightwing, but there will be certain big characters from the universe. Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale, James Gordon, and Renee Montoya are among those that Telltale revealed thus far, and they further teased that the villains are being kept a secret until closer to the premiere date. Some of the characters will have a close relationship with Bruce/Batman, and the decisions that he makes will influence their paths towards either corruption or redemption.

Visually, Telltale is "committing to a non-photorealistic interpretation of the deliver a more seamless living comic book art direction." The inspiration comes from the works of artists like "Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams."

Telltale Batman 2

Telltale hasn't set an exact release date for the Batman series, but it's slated to premiere this summer.
