Far Cry Primal Survivor Mode Coming Soon, Costs Only Your Life

By Mark Delaney, 6 months ago
Survival games and modes are so in right now. Far Cry Primal, a game that seems perfect for such a mode has now announced, well, such a mode. On April 12th, a free update to the game will allow masochistic players to test their strength of will and perseverance with several tweaks to the gameplay that are meant to make Primal very brutal.

At the top of the list is a permadeath setting. Survivor mode will offer players the choice of one or two lives that must be cared for greatly. If you play with the one life option, a death erases all progress immediately. The two lives option means you do get one retry and can hit checkpoints that will replenish that retry counter at certain intervals throughout the game. Vision missions are excluded from these penalties, said Ubisoft, as they "aren't 'real'".

The permadeath option doesn't need to be played at the highest difficulty. In fact, any difficulty setting is available with such a stipulation, so even if you don't want to be tossed around by Primal like a ragdoll, you can still feel the thrill of having just one life to live.

A stamina gauge means Takkar is slower and weaker when it runs out, and players will have to make time for sleep to replenish it. The minimap will also be removed, so you'd better get going on world history's first compass. The fog of war has also been strengthened, so revealing locations won't be nearly as generous in the main map menu. Less humans and animals will be around, which might sound like a positive, but that means hunting will be more difficult and the fruits of that labor will be more scarce. Fast travel will now consume food and stamina too.

If that still isn't sadistic enough for you, the animal powers have been weakened, so much so that you can't even use the owl to attack from the sky anymore. You'll have to fight animals til they're at half of their life points before you can bait them and then finally tame them. Animals receive permadeath settings too. You can still save them while they're in a near death state, but if they do pass, that's it for them. This is, of course, especially problematic if you had a legendary animal under your control. Ammo crafting takes a few seconds too. No longer is it instantaneous. Takkar is also pretty thin-skinned and more susceptible to the cold. Cold weather gear is now a must if you're playing within these parameters. Night time now lasts longer too.

No new achievements will come with this update, said Ubisoft, but they did tease a "special reward" for those who beat the new survivor mode with permadeath on expert difficulty.

Good luck! Clearly you're going to need it.
